Carl J. Hentges, 90 years old, of Alton, IA, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Orange City Area Health Systems Hospital in Orange City, IA. 

            Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Rev. Terry Roder officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. & a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

            Carl was born May 14, 1923, at rural Alton, IA, the son of Charles & Mary (Wilwert) Hentges.  He was educated at St. Mary’s Academy in Alton, graduating in 1941.  He spent time in the Army at Fort Joseph T. Robinson in Arkansas where he received an honorable discharge because of an injury received in basic training.

            On Jan. 27, 1945 he married Clara “Ceci” Bowers at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, IA.  They lived in Des Moines where he took training in store management.  They moved from Des Moines to Alton later and he purchased the hardware business from his sister Molly Biever after the death of her husband Al.  Next he bought the Hoxmier Store building adjoining his store and established Hentges Shoe and Clothing store.  Tom Braun bought the hardware store and Ed Karsen bought the shoe store.  Carl’s son Jim bought the Plumbing and Heating business.  In 1986 he retired and then traveled extensively with his wife to visit their children in distant places finally setteling in Fountain Of The Sun in Mesa, AZ for several years in the winter.  Recently he had been a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

            Carl was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  He was also active in the business community while working his business.

           Survivors include: his wife, Ceci of Remsen and formerly of Alton; 4 sons, Dave (Vicki) of Venice, FL, George (Sheila) of Augusta, GA, Charles and his friend Jan of Diamond Bar, CA, Jim (Corinne) of Alton; 7 Grandchildren, and 8 Great-grandchildren.

          Preceded by: his parents, one son Tom, 2 sisters, Molly Biever, Pearl Krogman.

          Casket Bearers will be, Joe Even, Steve Henrich, John Kiernan, Bob Reichle, Terry Streff, Frank Van Es.
