Daniel Lawrence Penning

Daniel Lawrence Penning, 73, of Remsen passed away on August 3 surrounded by his family following a brief illness of cancer. He is now home with Janet, the love of his life.
     Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church ELCA in LeMars, IA with Pastor Jean Ziettlow and Pastor Chris Meier officiating.  Burial will follow in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery at Craig, IA.  Visitation with family present will be 5-7 p.m. Monday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen, IA.  Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.  Condolences may be sent online to www.fischfh.com.
     Daniel was born on June 23, 1945 to Edward Peter and Anna Priscilla (Klein) Penning in a farmhouse near Granville, Iowa.  He was raised on the farm near Granville and received his education from Spalding Catholic School, graduating in 1963.Daniel was united in marriage to Janet Halweg on August 24, 1968 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville, IA.  Daniel lived in the Remsen and Granville areas most of his life.  He worked at farming with his father, driving cement truck, and in his earlier years he did body work on vehicles in Sioux City.  He loved doing woodworking projects, fishing, telling jokes and enjoyed visits from his grandchildren.
     He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in LeMars.
     Daniel is loved by his survivors including his children Melany (John) Roling of Remsen, Tena Leners of Mason City, IA, Dawn (Jim) Boeshart of Sioux City, IA, Talon (Anita) Penning, Casey (Amy) Penning all of Remsen, IA, Kevin (fiancé Jenny Jones) of LeMars, IA and Kara Koehn of Kingsley, IA.  Grandchildren Robert & Brad Roling, Brooke, Brittany, Trent & Breanna Leners, Kiley & Mikayla Boeshart, Audra & Andrea Penning, Bailey, Colbey & Brodey Penning, Taylor DeBoer, Hunter & Jaycee Koehn and 5 great-grandchildren. Sisters, Catherine Fischer of Sheldon, IA, Rosie (Rich) Mayrose of Aurora, CO,  Elaine (Lou) Broughton of Tulsa, OK, Brother, Marvin (Mary) Penning of Nebraska City, NE, sister-in-law, Darlene (Ivan) Jeppson of Bancroft, NE, Brother-in-law, Ed Cole of Nebraska, and several nieces and nephews and cousins.
     He is preceded in death by his wife, Janet in 2013, grandson, Derek Penning, son in law, Jeff Koehn, his parents Edward & Anna, his in-laws Louis & Tena Halweg, brothers, Harold (Delores) Penning and Sylvester Penning, sisters, Patricia Cole and Doris Mae (in infancy), brother-in-law, John Fischer, Leonard (Betty) Halweg, sister-in-law, Dorothy (Wallace) Sorensen, his beloved wiener dog , Peanut.Casket bearers will be Robert & Brad Roling, Rod Cole, Mark & Bruce Sorensen and Alan Jeppson.
     Honorary bearers will be Dan’s grandchildren.
