David Evan Niggeling

September 19, 1943 — May 7, 2020

David E. Niggeling, 76 years old, of Torrance, CA and formerly of Remsen, IA passed away after a short battle with cancer on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA.  

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, 2020 at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen with Father William McCarthy officiating.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, viewing with no family present and limited to 10 people at a time will be Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.  Condolences may be sent online to www.fischfh.com

David was born on Sept. 19, 1943 in LeMars, IA. to Tom and Hazel (Oberman) Niggeling. He was raised in Remsen and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School graduating in 1961.  He then served in the US Navy from Sept. 15, 1961 to Sept. 9, 1964 and served on the USS Princeton.  He was then transferred to the US Navy Reserves until Sept. 14, 1967.  David then began working at Common Marketing Distribution in Bellflower, CA and Later worked for Swift Trucking at both Long Beach, CA and Torrance, CA. 

David was a member of a shuffleboard league in California and was known as “Shuffleboard Dave” by his friends.  He enjoyed deep sea fishing, lake fishing, his trips to Canada, watching basketball on TV.  He was an avid book reader, loved movies, county music and was a huge Raiders and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed his trips back home to spend time with his family.

Survivors include, his four siblings, Jack (Pam) Niggeling of Arnolds Park, IA, Kathy (Wayne) Augustine, Jean (Joel) Fisch both of Remsen, IA, Judy (Steve) Leonard of Sioux City, IA; 11 nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Tom & Hazel Niggeling, his paternal grandparents, Nick & Millie Niggeling, his maternal grandparents, George & Margaret Oberman.  Casket bearers will be, Todd & Tim Niggeling, Doug & Mark Augustine, Mike Fisch and Scott Leonard.
