Donald J. Ortmann, 84 years old, of Remsen, IA died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy and Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus rosary, then 4th degree chalice presentation all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Don was born on Feb. 24, 1929, at Remsen, IA the son of Henry and Regina (Dalhoff) Ortmann. He was raised in the Remsen area and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1946. He then worked with his parents on the farm until he entered the U.S. Army in 1951. When he returned from the Army he met Sandra Schaefer and they were united in marriage on Sept. 7, 1954. Together, they farmed and raised a family in the Remsen area.
Don was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Church Board, Remsen Co-Op Board, Catholic Order of Foresters and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. For 10 years Don and Sandy were Marriage Sponsors.
Don was an honorable man, devoted to his faith and family. Grateful for sharing Don’s life are his wife, Sandra of Remsen; their children, Barb (Tim) Vonnahme of Las Vegas, NV, Cathy (Bob) Fleming of Bloomington, IL, Donna Murphy of Boise, ID, Trish (Tim) Ortmann of Boise, ID, Helen (Don) Seibel of West Des Moines, IA, Joan Ortmann of North St. Paul, MN, Maggie (Ben) Hoffmann of Minnetonka, MN, Bill (Brenda) Ortmann of Remsen, Amy Ortmann of Sioux Falls, SD; son-in-law, Mark (Joli) Bruggeman of Larchwood, IA; 14 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jeanette Koch of Remsen; his brother, Dr. Louis (Betsy) Ortmann of Festus, MO; sister-in-law, Eileen Ortmann of LeMars, IA; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
Preceded in death by, his parents, a daughter, Julie Bruggeman; brothers, Joe and Fr. Bill Ortmann; son-in-law, Jay Murphy; mother and father-in-law, Lawrence and Dulces Schaefer; brothers-in-law, Melvin Koch and L. Thomas Schaefer.
Casketbearers will be, Ben Hoffmann, Don Seibel, Mark Bruggeman, Tim Vonnahme, David and Tom Ortmann.
Honorary bearers will be member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus.
In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary's Church and St. Mary's School in Remsen or Hospice of Siouxland.
