Donald John Zenk, 92 years old, of Alton, IA, passed away Monday, Nov. 8, 2021 at Accura Healthcare of Le Mars, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 12, 2021, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with Father Daniel Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Graveside military honors will be conducted by Floyd Post 200 American Legion of Alton. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, there will be a K of C rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the church. Visitation will resume one hour before the service on Friday at the church.
Donald was born June 23, 1929 at Alton, IA, the son of Michael & Margaret (Engeldinger) Zenk. He was raised near Alton and attended St. Mary’s Academy in Alton graduating in 1948. After high school he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953.
On April 27, 1957 he married Viola Reuter at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hospers, IA. The couple made their home on the family farm until 1996 when they moved into Alton.
Donald was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was a director of the Alton Savings Bank for 19 years and served on the Floyd Valley School Board and other boards. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards and farming.
Survivors include, his wife Viola of Alton, IA; six children, Rose (John) Klein of Omaha, NE, Patrice (Ted) York of Linn Creek, MO, Tom Zenk of Omaha, NE, Jerry (Angie) Zenk of Urbandale, IA, Pat (Jean) Zenk of Alton, IA and Jennifer (Mark) McCormack of Omaha, NE; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Catherine Twombley of Ankeny, IA.
He was preceded in death by, his parents; his step mother, Mollie; two sisters, Mildred (George) Vortherms and Mary Ann (Mark) Full; five brothers, Milo Zenk, Alfred Zenk, Alvin (Sue) Zenk, Cyril (Corrine) Zenk and Msgr. Richard Zenk.
Casket bearers will be Robert Klein, Jake Zenk, Jason Zenk, Tyler Zenk, Jack Zenk and Zac McCormack.
