Esther Bacan

December 17, 1915 — July 30, 2013

Esther Bacan, 97 years old, of Remsen, IA, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. 
            Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen with Rev. Dennis Martens officiating.  Burial will be in the Remsen Community Cemetery.  Visitation will be anytime after 5p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013.  There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume Friday morning from 9a.m. until service time at the church.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
            Esther was born Dec. 17, 1915, at Sanborn, IA, the daughter of Andrew and Dora (Kits) Hoeven.  She lived at Sanborn until the age of ten, when the family moved to Arizona, where they lived for two years and they then returned to Iowa. She graduated from Primghar High School at Primghar, IA, in 1934. She then taught rural school in O’Brien County for five years.
     On July 24, 1941 she married D. A. (Dorance Alexander) Bacan at Primghar, IA where they made their home. Eight months later, D. A. entered the U. S. Army, served during WWII, and was discharged in Oct. of 1945, and he then returned to his wife at Primghar. In 1948 the couple moved to Remsen, in 1960 they moved to Orange City, IA and in 1964 they moved back to Remsen. D. A. died Feb. 23, 2000. In 2003 Esther moved to Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, IA.
     Esther was a member of Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen, Christ Lutheran Ladies Aid and a past member of the church choir. She was a past member of the Happy Siesta Health Care Center Auxiliary in Remsen and had served on the Happy Siesta Care Review Board for ten years. She enjoyed playing the organ, gardening, sewing, golfing and bowling
     Survivors include: two daughters, Jane and her husband Reg Morton and Mary Bacan all of Baton Rouge, LA; one son, Tom and his wife Bev of Remsen; four grandchildren, Susan and her husband Todd Black of Baton Rouge, LA, John Morton and his wife Kim all of Holden, LA, Brett Bacan and his wife Nicole of McCook Lake, SD, Stephanie and her husband Luis Castera of Indianapolis, IN; six great-grandchildren.
     Esther was preceded in death by, her parents, four brothers, Everette and his wife Marie Hoeven, William and his wife Dorothy Hoeven, John and his wife LaRue Hoeven and Alison Hoeven when a child; four sisters, Laverne and her husband Elmer Sundquist, Ellamay Hoeven, Dorothy and her husband Milo Schoening and Evelyn Marie Hoeven in infancy.
     Casket bearers will be, Susan Black, John Morton, Brett & Nicole Bacan, Stephanie & Luis Castera.
