Ethel Mayer

November 6, 1927 — June 8, 2014

Ethel Mayer, 86 years old, of Remsen, IA died Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Hospice House in Omaha, NE. 

            Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 13, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating & Deacon Rick Roder assisting.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2014.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

            Ethel was born on Nov. 6, 1927, at LeMars, IA the daughter of Herman & Regina (Schroeder) Freking.  She was raised and educated in LeMars and attended St. Joseph Grade School and High School graduating in 1946.  She then worked at the Plymouth County court house in the Treasurer’s office.

            On April 15, 1953 she married Albert Mayer at St. Joseph Catholic Church in LeMars.  The couple made their home near Remsen where they farmed.  They then moved into Remsen Jan. 1978.  Albert passed away Aug. 6, 1992.  Ethel continued to live in Remsen until 2008 when she moved to Omaha, NE.  Over the years she did a lot of volunteer work for St. Catherine’s and St. Mary’s Schools and also at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

     Ethel was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen and church guild,  V.F.W. Auxiliary and past member of Catholic Daughters of America.

     Survivors include: her children, Dave Mayer of San Diego, CA, Kevin Mayer & his wife Becky in LeMars, IA, Brenda Goodlett, Janice Merritt & her husband Randy, Carol Mayer, Lisa Guinan & her husband Pat all of Omaha, NE, Sheryl Hall & her husband Darin of Lincoln, NE, one daughter-in-law, Martha (Mayer) Sokolowski of Remsen;  16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

     Preceded in death by, her parents, a daughter Mary in infancy, one son Ron, one son-in-law, Jerry Goodlett.

     Casket Bearers will be Matthew Mayer, Ryan Merritt, Erik and Nick Goodlett, Allen and Dean Mayer.

     Honorary Bearers will be Gary, Joel, Ashley, Amber, LeKesha and Ben Mayer.
