Francis A. Nilles, age 88 of Remsen, Iowa died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, IA. Graveside military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 220 and V.F.W. Post 3328 of Remsen. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a vigil prayer service and parish rosary at 5 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen. Condolences may be sent online to www.fischfh.com.
Francis was born Sept. 10, 1929 to Domonic and Mary (Arend) Nilles at Remsen, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Remsen and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Remsen. After high school he entered the US Army, with active duty in Korea from 1951 to 1953 and Honorable discharge on Nov. 1, 1959. He earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
On May 3, 1954, he married Patricia S. Schneider. He worked at West Iowa Telephone Company in Remsen for 50 years. Pat died Oct. 4, 2014.
Francis was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 3328 of Remsen and was also active with the Remsen Color Guard for many years. In his past time he was an avid reader, golfer and enjoyed spending time with family.
Grateful for having shared his life are one son David( Terri) Nilles of Alton, one daughter Joan Nilles of Storm Lake; four grandchildren, Maggie ( Luke ) Greving of Alton, IA, Abby Nilles and Mike of Phoenix, AZ, Kelsey ( Zach) Kellen of Granville, IA, Jon (fiancée Jena) of Nashville, TN; great grand children Emmalyn and Elliot Greving; three sisters-in-law, Sandy (Bob) Erickson of Eustis, FL, Mariwyn McComb of Lafayette, CA, Jan Schneider of Alton, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Pat, his parents-Dominic & Mary, four sisters Mildred (Hank) Harpenau, Catherine (Ray) Meis, Bernadette (Nick) Gergen, Lucille (Bill) Christoffel, Three brothers Arthur, infant boy and Leroy. And one great grandson Elijah Greving
Casket bearers will be Jon Nilles, Luke Greving, Zach Kellen, Galen Schneider, Layne Schneider, Pat Hinrichsen.
