George L. Erichsen, 90 of Remsen, IA died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, IA.
Funeral Service will be Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. from Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen, with Pastor Dennis Martens officiating. Burial will be in the Remsen Community Cemetery. Visitation will be any time after 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2013. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. all at the church. George was born Oct. 14, 1923 at rural Remsen, IA, the son of August & Ida (Nitzschke) Erichsen. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education in the rural school system. He then farmed with his parents until 1947, when he went into partnership with his brother, Arnold, and they took over the family farm.
On Aug. 21, 1959 he married Shirley Ostert Klaschen at Marcus, IA. They made their home on the family farm, which they took over sole operation of. They retired and moved into Remsen in 1990. Shirley died May 6, 2010.
George was a member of Christ Lutheran Church LCMS and served on the church council for many years. He served on the Board of Directors of Remsen Farmers Co-Op for 9 years and the Board of Directors on the First Trust Savings Bank for 24 years, both in Remsen. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, gardening and canning. His favorite baseball team was the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed spending time with family, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren played a major role in his life.
Survivors include: his two daughters, Sandra (Gary) Schmid, Marcia (Ted) Nothem all of Remsen; six grandchildren, Shelly (James) Thomson, Jason (Theresa) Schmid, Melissa (Brian) Juhl all of Remsen, Troy Nothem of Omaha, NE, Lori (Ashton) Snyder of Houston, TX, Todd (Steph) Nothem of Remsen; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Rita Ostert of LeMars, IA.
Preceded by, his parents; three brothers, Walter (Glydelle) Erichsen, Arnold (Arlene) Erichsen and Edward Erichsen as a young child; one sister, Hilda (Bill) Henrich.
Casket Bearers will be James Thomson, Jason Schmid, Brian Juhl, Troy Nothem, Ashton Synder & Todd Nothem.
Honorary Bearers will be Brad Ufken, Carlyn & Cevon Erichsen, Gayl Henrich, Allen & Richard Erichsen.
