Harold H. Hagert

Harold H. “Harry” Hagert, 82 years old, of Remsen, IA died peacefully after a brief illness Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. 

            Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen.  Military Honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July15, 2014.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

            Harry was born on April 16, 1932, at Wabasso, MN the son of Joseph and Anna (Gossling) Hagert.  At the age of 4 after the death of his mother he entered St. Anthony’s Orphanage in Sioux City and then at the age of 12 came to Remsen to live with his grandpa and his aunt Clara Gossling.  He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School graduating in 1952.  He then entered the U.S. Army in 1953 and served in the Korean War.  He was honorably discharged in 1961.  He then worked for Western Contracting on road construction. 

     On Nov. 24, 1962, he married Marie Block at Marcus.  The couple made their home in Remsen where Harry worked for Jack Thiel Service in Remsen, then farmed with his uncles Joe & Albert Gossling until 1976 and also during that time worked for Wilson Foods in Cherokee and until 1991 when he retired due to health conditions.

     Harry was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  He was a Scout Master for many years and received the St. George Emblem.  He loved to fish, read, listen to classical music, going to the mountains in Arizona “looking for Gold”.  He loved spoiling the grandchildren.

     Survivors include:  his wife Marie of Remsen; one son, Ronald (Tammie) Hagert of Remsen; four daughters, Theresa (Bob) Geary of Elk Point, SD, Mary (Gary) Schwebach of Remsen, Anna (Craig) Siedlik of Omaha, NE, Patricia Hagert of Sioux City, IA;  12 grandchildren; one brother, Donald Hagert of Decorah, IA; one sister, Jeanette Howcroft of Greeley, CO; one sister-in-law, Joan Hagert of St. Paul, MN; one half sister, Lorraine Schruyer of Bloomington, MN.

     Preceded in death by, his parents, one son John, two brothers, Gerald and Virgil, two sisters, Virginia Cambier and Rita Morehead, nine half brothers and sisters, Marcella Baune, Agnes Eichten, Marie Fernolz, Kathryn Hagert, Edmund Hagert, Edward Hagert, Lucille Jelleberg, Joseph Hagert and Louise Hagert in infancy.

     Casketbearers will be Alex and Andrew Hagert, C. J. Geary, Josh and Adam Schwebach, Parker Siedlik.

     Honorary bearers will be Ashley Geary, Katie Siedlik, Kendra Hagert, Hayley Siedlik, Rachel Geary, Johanna Jones.
