Hubert P. Nothem

Hubert “Hubie” Nothem, 100 years old, of Remsen, IA died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA. 

        Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. Tim Johnson, Rev. William McCarthy and Deacon Rick Roder officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Knight of Columbus Rosary all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

      Hubie was born on July 27, 1913, at Remsen, IA the son of Theodore and Anna (Pieffer) Nothem.  He was raised in the Remsen area and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School graduating eighth grade in 1927.  From 1925 to 1928, Hubert worked part time at the Nothem Funeral Home and Nothem Furniture Store in Remsen.  From 1928 to 1933 he worked for his uncle Nick Lauters on the farm near Remsen and making moonshine.  From 1933 he assisted building the Remsen Light Plant and when not busy there he helped his Dad in the carpenter trade.  In 1935 he started working for Remsen Light Plant until 1950. 

     On Nov. 4, 1940 he married Bertha Bindner.  He left for the service in Dec. 1942 for World War II serving in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines until his discharge in 1945.  In 1950, after moving his family to a farm southeast of Remsen, he farmed and worked as a carpenter until 1979.  In 1980, he and Bertha started Hubies Plant and Flower Shop in Remsen until he retired in April of 1985.  After Hubie and Bertha moved into Remsen in 1990.  Known as Mr. Christmas, Hubie started making and displaying animated lawn Christmas ornaments.  Bertha passed away April 22, 1997.  Hubie was recognized as Remsen's Citizen of The Year in 2001.

     Hubie was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  V.F.W. Post 3328, Luxemburg Brotherhood and Knights of Columbus.  He hobbies included collecting model trains, light houses and tractors. He enjoyed building his own scale model of farm equipment and animated toys.

     Hubie was survived by his four children, Ted (Marcia) Nothem, Mike (Becky) Nothem, Terri (Mike) Slota all of Remsen.  Chris Reicks and special friend Paul Halder of Tracy, CA; Son-in-law, David Shea of San Jose, CA; 15 Grandchildren; 26 Great-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Nemmers of LeMars; three sisters-in-law, Gloria Welte of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Elvira Bindner of Marcus, IA, Darleen Bindner of Placencia, CA; many nieces and nephews.

     Preceded in death by, his parents, daughter, Pam Shea; son, Robert Nothem; sister, Evelyn (Nick) Alesch; brother, Tony Nothem; brother-in-law, Orville Nemmers.

     Casketbearers will be, Chris & Greg Shea, Troy & Todd Nothem, Rick Nothem, Jerome III, Christopher and Jonathan Reicks.

     Honorary Bearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus.
