James Roman Arens

James Roman Arens, 72 years old, of Remsen, IA, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating and Deacon Rick Roder assisting. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen, IA. Graveside military honors will be conducted by Post 3328 VFW and Post 220 American Legion of Remsen. Visitation with family present will be Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m., there will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Jim was born Oct. 11, 1944, at Remsen, IA, the son of Oswald & Doris (Schnepf) Arens. He was raised on the farm east of Remsen. He graduated from St. Mary’s High Shcool in 1962 and attended Iowa State University for one year, then returned home to farm. Jim enlisted in the Army National Guard on March 14, 1966 and served in Vietnam, he was honorably discharged on March 13, 1972.

On Jan. 21, 1967 he married Judy Treinen. Judy passed away on Feb. 8, 1983.

On May 22, 1992 he married Judy Agena. The couple made their home on a farm north of Remsen. Jim drove truck and loved to farm, raising cattle up until his passing.

Jim was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Remsen Lions Club, Plymouth County Cattleman’s and was a past board member and president, St. Mary’s Church and School Boards, 4H youth, Remsen Farmers Co-Op Board.

Survivors include: his wife Judy of Remsen, his children, Chris (Julie) Arens, Deb (Nick) Staab both of Remsen, Jodi (Kory) Smith of Okoboji, IA, Tim (Julie) Cambier of Tempe, AZ, and Sue (Terry) Brandon of Waverly, IA; 8 grandchildren; 5 brothers, Joe (Betty) Arens, Jerry (Monica) Arens, Lou (Peg) Arens all of Remsen, Phil (LeAnn) Arens of LeMars and Rob (Pam) Arens of Remsen; one sister, Ann (Dan) McManus of Dakota Dunes, SD; brother-in-law, Don (Mary) Treinen of Remsen and sister-in-law, Pat (John) Norris of Mankato, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded by: his parents and his wife Judy (Treinen) Arens, his in-laws, Joe & Evelyn Agena.

Casket bearers will be Alec, Carter, Greg, Jeff and Pat Arens, Terry Brandon and Roman Staab.
