Joseph Nicholas Gengler

Joseph Nicholas Gengler, 88 years old, of Remsen, IA, passed away Monday, July 29, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy & Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 & American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be any time after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Joe was born April 5, 1925, at Remsen, IA, the son of Michael and Margaret (Goetzinger) Gengler. Joe was raised and educated in the Remsen area and attended St. Mary’s School.
On February 7, 1949 he married Viola (Baker) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. The couple farmed south of Remsen until moving into town in August of 1984.
Joe was a devoted Catholic member of St. Mary’s Parish and served in Korea during World War II. Joe was passoniate about farming the homestead until he began his twenty–five years as custodian serving the students, staff, and families of St. Mary’s Parish. Joe loved most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren. Even though Joe had 12 children of his own, there wasn’t a child he didn’t have time for. He enjoyed playing pinochle, making his famous pancakes, watching sports, and will always be remembered for putting himself second to others.
Joe is survived by his wife Viola of Remsen; twelve children, Karen (David) Wimer of Fremont, NE., Connie Carter of Omaha, NE., Jim Gengler and Wendy Roads of Primghar, IA., Diane Pfeffer of Omaha, NE., Jane (Bob) Prieksat of Fort Calhoun, NE., Laurie (Martin) Long of Lyons, NE., Rod and Barb (Thorman) of Fremont, NE., Lisa Gengler of LeMars, IA., Dale and Diane (Boisen) Gengler of Sioux City, IA., Kyle and Brenda (Ruhland) Gengler of Remsen, IA., Tammie (Bill) Miller of LeMars, IA., and Stacie Gengler of Omaha, NE. Twenty-two grandchildren, Chris and Scott Wimer, Jeff Carter, Amy Vos, Karie Aeikens, Jon Gengler, Chelsey Pfeffer, Jason and Joe Prieksat, Megan, Miranda and Martin Avery Long, Cody Gengler, Nikki Mausbach, Tyler, Brent and Thane Gengler, Tyler Broveak, Derek and Daren Gengler, Brittany and Shelby Miller; fifteen great-grandchildren; Two sisters, Martha (Roy) Sitzmann and Rita (Howard) Sitzmann of LeMars, IA, Sister-in-law, Margaret (Byrd) Gengler of Remsen, IA., and Margie (Bergner) Gengler of Quimby, IA.
Preceded by his parents, five brothers, Michael (Martha), Aloysius, Clarence (Mildred), Raymond, and Vernon and two sisters; Marie (Erwin) Tentinger and Norma (Paul) Kayser.
Casket Bearers are his grandsons Chris Wimer, Jason Prieksat, Cody Gengler, Jon Gengler, Derek Gengler and Scott Wimer.
Honorary pall bearers will be the Knights of Columbus.
