Lyle Anthony Schroeder

Lyle A. Schroeder, 83 years old, of Remsen, formerly of Granville, IA, died on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Orange City Area Health System in Orange City, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with Father Dan Greving officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Granville, IA.  Visitation with family present will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday.  There will be a rosary by the Knights of Columbus and vigil prayer service all at 5  p.m. at the church in Granville.         

Lyle Anthony Schroeder was born May 30, 1935 on a farm southeast of Remsen to Clarence and Florence (Warborg) Schroeder. Prior to his education, he survived polio which left him bedridden for many months at the age of 5. Lyle attended St Catherine’s grade school in Oyens, IA and graduated from Union Consolidated High School in 1953.           

He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Kessenich, on January 8, 1958 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Neptune, IA. Together they made their home on a farm southwest of Granville until 2010 when they relocated to Remsen. Along with their children, they farrowed sows and raised cattle as well as corn, soybeans and oats. Lyle thrived on hard work along with his dad and brothers; they bailed hay and straw, poured cement and maintained general farm construction. Lyle spent every healthy day of his life on the farm, but knew the kitchen as well as he knew the yard to assist with canning and butchering. He adapted new farm methods and technologies but was always true to his first love, Case IH machinery.           

Lyle was an active member as a Township trustee, Granville Jaycee, Farm Bureau Board and lifetime Remsen Knights of Columbus. Lyle was an active parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church as a parish lector and Eucharistic minister along with serving on the financial board. Lyle’s largest charity contribution was to the blood bank as a lifelong donor.           

Lyle had a kind sense of humor to match the knowing smile under his Pioneer cap. He enjoyed playing pinochle, visiting friends and relatives, spending time with grandchildren including attendance to their countless events, dipping his cookie in coffee, planting and harvesting, raising livestock, driving his ATV (the Mule) and checking on what his sons were up to’.  Lyle was a farmer who worked hard, a breadwinner who provided, a husband who was a loving and devoted caregiver to his wife, a father who raised his children and a grandfather who loved his grandchildren.

Lyle is survived by his four children, Alan (Laurie Galles) Schroeder, Daniel (Julia Bunkers) Schroeder of Granville, Stephen (Michelle Cowan) Schroeder of Remsen, Janet (Thomas) Zenk of Omaha, NE; 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 5 on the way; brothers, Mark (Jeanette) Schroeder of LeMars, Bill (Janys) Schroeder of Kingsley, sisters Doris (Bob) Gengler and Betty (Dick) Homan of Remsen; In-laws, Stanley Kessenich, John (Lois) Kessenich of LeMars, Marge Schiltz of Remsen and Mary Ellen (Leo) Stessman of Omaha, NE, Dorothy (Larry) Ruhland of LeMars, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson, Jared John Schroeder, mother & father in-law Jack and Mae Kessenich, brother, Darrel (Cloette) Schroeder, and sister Marjorie Schroeder; two sisters-in-law, Marge Schroeder and Rosalene Kessenich, two brothers-in-law, Cletus Schiltz, and Dale Kessenich.

Casket bearers will be Jeff Schroeder, Doug Schroeder, Randy Schroeder, Jacquie (Schroeder) Grinde, Russel Schroeder, Janelle (Schroeder) Bolton, Emily Zenk and Jack Zenk.

Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren and members of the Knights of Columbus.
