Margie was born on May 14, 1947 the daughter of Richard & Ruth (VanBergen) Keffler. She was raised in Marcus, Iowa and graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s High School in 1964.  She then went on to graduate college from Briar Cliff University in 1968.

On January 31, 1970 Margie married George Kersten. The couple had two children, Richard and Matthew.  For Margie, her 28 plus years of service at Village Northwest were a labor of love. It was a true vocation realized, giving her the opportunity to share her spirit and love with the Village staff and residents.  Margie received multiple personal and professional recognitions, including Employee of the Year at Village Northwest Unlimited, Sheldon, IA; Volunteer of the Year, Briar Cliff University, Sioux City, IA; and Iowa Who’s Who of Volunteers.

Margie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, and friend.  She had a wonderful sense of humor, never without a smile and a great listener. She was a woman of faith, believing in God’s truth even when emotions or circumstances may say something different.

Margie enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, and the Iowa Hawkeyes and Fox News. She loved the color red and all things apples in which to decorate her kitchen with. Springtime was when she was able to show off her love of flowers and gardening. The holidays were always Margie’s favorite time of the year and we all looked forward to seeing her in her festive Christmas sweaters.

Margie is survived by her best friend and husband of 51 years, George Kersten of Hospers; their sons, Richard (Nikki) Kersten, Matt (Julie) Kersten; grandchildren Drew Kersten, Andrea Kersten, and Jaslyn Schweiss;  mother-in-law, Geraldine (Jerry) Kersten-Den Hartog; sisters-in-law, Suzie (Tom) Palmtag, Sandy (Mike) Rose, Mary (Paul) Smit, Donna Hutchison, LaNita (Dennis) Van Roekel; Brother-in-law Denny (Eleanor) Den Hartog.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Ruth Keffeler, and her stepfathers, Jim Beck and Neal Den Hartog, father-in-law, George W. Kersten, and a sister Mary Keffeler who died at birth.

Casket bearers will be Jon Dykstra, Chuck Mulder, Jeff Schmillen, Jim Stofferan, Max Treinen and Chad Walker.

Honorary bearers will be Linda Adams, LeAnne Collins, Helen Dykstra, Ada Geels, Kay Jansen, Billie Muilenburg and Cliff Vander Burgh.
