Maxine Staab, 86 years old, of Remsen, IA died Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument LLC in Remsen.
Maxine was born on Nov. 25, 1923, at Marcus, IA the daughter of Guido & Edith (Cox) Berendes. She was raised in the Marcus area and attended Holy Name Catholic School until her Junior year in high school when she moved with her family to Remsen. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Remsen in 1942. She then attended St. Joseph’s Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA. She graduated in 1945 with a degree in nursing.
On Nov. 20, 1945 she married Roman Staab at Remsen. The couple made their home on a farm north of Remsen. In Jan. 1993 they moved into Town. She entered the Happy Siesta Health Care Center Nov. 2006.
Maxine loved to play cards, fishing, quilting, embroidery, she was a fantastic cook, she also liked going to cattle sales with her husband Roman and kept daily market logs. According to Roman, Maxine was a fabulous dancer. They attended many dances in the area, especially on Thursday night which was a Remsen area common thing to do.
Survivors include: her husband Roman of Remsen; Four sons, Jim Staab & his wife Rosie, Jerry Staab & his wife Barb all of Remsen, Pat Staab & his wife Claudette of Marcus, IA, Joe Staab of Remsen; 11) Grandchidren; 19) Great-grandchildren. 1) Sister, Ann Beck of Remsen; 4) Sisters-in-law, Shirley Berendes of Castle Rock, CO, Fern Staab of Remsen, Helen Wiederholt of LeMars, IA & Rita Mary & her husband Ed Schaaf of Eugene, OR.
Preceded in death by, her parents, 2) Brothers, Jack & Don Berendes, 4) Brothers-in-law, Harry Beck, Vitus Wiederholt, Emil Schilmoeller & Ervin Staab. 2) Sisters-in-law, Doris Rielly & Elizabeth Schilmoeller.
Pallbearers will be John, Nick, Mark, Mike, Matt, Jeff & Russ Staab.
