Melvin Koch, 89 of Remsen, IA died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, IA.
Funeral Service will be Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, IA, with Rev. William McCarthy officiating and Rev. Terry Roder concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen, IA. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011. There will be a parish rosary at 3p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., followed with a Knight of Columbus rosary all at the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Melvin was born, Feb. 24, 1922, on the Koch family farm at rural Remsen, the son of Ernest & Anna (Klaschen) Koch. Melvin was raised and educated in the Remsen area. He attended Henry Township Country School for elementary grades and graduated from Remsen Public High School in 1939. He then went into farming with his parents.
He married Jeanette Ortmann on Aug. 17, 1948, at Remsen, Iowa. They then took over the operation of the family farm that became the Koch century farm. Melvin and Jeanette retired on the farm in 1985 and moved into Remsen in 1992.
Melvin was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knight of Columbus. He enjoyed ushering and counting collection at St. Mary’s Church. He volunteered with Oscar Cash, maintaining the St. Mary’s grotto and delivering Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include: his wife, Jeanette of Remsen; three sons & their wives, Gene & Diane of Fort Dodge, IA, Dave of Omaha, NE, Jim & Stephanie of Lake Ozark, MO; three daughters & their husbands, Paula & Marvin Roder, Joanne & David Jahn all of Sioux City, IA, Mary & Tom Klein of Waukee, IA; 22) Grandchildren; 8) Great-grandchildren.
Preceded by: his parents, one son in infancy, two sisters, Miss Charlotte Koch & Minnie Schmitt & her husband Alfred.
Casket Bearers will be Michael, Daniel, Andrew, Zach & Hunter Koch, Steve & Jeff Roder, Mitchell Klein.
