Norma Lucy Schroeder

Norma L. Schroeder, 91 years old, of Remsen, IA died Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, IA.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 29, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with family present will be from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday,September 28, 2017. There will be a parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Norma was born on Sept. 9, 1926, at rural Remsen, IA the daughter of William and Clara (Heidesch) Staab. She was raised and educated in Remsen and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School from which she graduated in 1944. She then helped at home on the family farm.

On Oct. 21, 1947, she married Irvin Schroeder at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA. The couple made their home near Granville where they farmed. In 1957 they moved to a farm near Remsen where they started dairy farming with Irvin’s brother Silverius. They moved to Remsen in 1974 but continued to farm until retiring in 1987.

Norma was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She also belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America and Christian Mothers, holding offices in both organizations. She loved to crochet, quilt, read, play cards and travel. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow.

Survivors include: her husband Irvin of Remsen; two daughters; Lynne (Duane) Paulsen of Brandon, SD, Julie (Larry) Nguyen of Grandview, IA, Three sons; Gary (Madalyn) Schroeder of LeMars, IA, Tom (Wanda) Schroeder of LeMars, IA, Mike (Linda) Schroeder of Urbandale, IA. One son-in-law, Gene Sanow of Vermillion, SD; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Braun of Remsen, IA; one sister-in-law, Edith Staab of Remsen, IA, numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Karen Sanow, two granddaughters, Kim Nguyen and Wendy Sanow, one brother Vernon Staab, one brother-in-law, Art “Bud” Braun.

Casketbearers will be Roger and Jerry Braun, Anthony and Steve Staab, Joe Schroeder, Allan Rupp.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary’s Church or St. Mary’s Schools in Remsen.
