Paul Eugene Poeckes

Paul Eugene Poeckes 73 of Remsen, IA passed away, Friday, Sept. 30th, 2016 peacefully at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars IA surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating and Deacon Rick Roder assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation with family present will be 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, there will be a parish rosary at 5p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Paul was born on September 27th, 1943 to Eugene and Myra (Pick) Poeckes in LeMars, IA. He was raised on the rural farm in Remsen, IA and received his education from Remsen St. Mary’s and graduated in 1962. Paul enlisted in the Army National Guard and was discharged in December 1965.
On June 27th, 1970 he married Sharon Rae Kramer at St. James Catholic Church in LeMars, IA. Paul was self-employed his entire life as a dairy farmer until 1997. He continued working part-time helping a local farmer.
Paul was a member of the St Mary’s Catholic Church. Paul loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball, going to Briar Cliff Basketball games and the Sioux City Musketeers Hockey games. He had a passion for all sports and the knowledge of all stats for every baseball team. He enjoyed trapping every fall season and was an expert at smoking fish. He also enjoyed traveling to the Okoboji Lakes every summer.
Paul loved his wife dearly and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include: his wife, Sharon of Remsen; his children, son Brian (Keri) Poeckes of LeMars, daughter Kim Smith of Akron, and son Chris (Michele) Poeckes of Remsen; seven grandchildren, Abbie and Lauren Duhn of LeMars, Danika, Logan and Josie Smith of Akron, Gavin and Bennett Poeckes of Remsen. Three brothers, Art (Peggy) Poeckes of LeMars, Mark (Pam) Poeckes of Remsen and Dennis (Kathy) Poeckes of Remsen; one brother-in-law, Robert Harpenau; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents –in-law, Henry and LuVerna Kramer. His siblings, Geraldine Hilton, Eugene Poeckes Jr., Jeanette Harpenau and Roger “Jake” Poeckes.
Casket bearers will be Dustin, Don, Tom, and Brad Poeckes, Rodney Harpenau and Logan Smith.
