Paul Gordon Homan, 87 years old, of Remsen, IA, died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at his home in Remsen, IA.

 
 Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating and Deacon Rick Roder assisting.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen, IA.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.  Visitation with family present will be Sunday, May 8, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m., there will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

 
Paul was born Sept. 24, 1928, at Remsen, IA, the son of Peter & Rose (Wenner) Homan.  He grew up on a farm southeast of Remsen and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School graduating in 1946.  He then worked on the dairy farm with his older brother Gerald.

 
On Oct. 2, 1951 he was united in marriage to Ethel Ortmann in LeMars, IA . The couple made their home on the farm until Paul entered the armed forces in January of 1953.  Paul received his basic training and attended Leadership School at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  He then served for a year and a half with the Army Artillery FDC (Fire Division Corp) in Korea.  After his discharge, he joined his father Pete and brothers Pete Jr. and Gordon in the Home Lumber Company in Remsen.

 
In 1967 Paul began his career with the United States Postal Department.  He began as a clerk in the Remsen Post Office and was later appointed postmaster, a position which he held until his retirement in 1992. 

 
Paul was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He enjoyed fishing, golfing, music, woodworking, picture puzzles and western movies, especially those starring John Wayne.  He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed his morning pinochle games. He was eagerly awaiting the opening of the Remsen St. Mary’s baseball season to begin. He very much enjoyed singing with the T.H.E.E. Choir, the Everlasting Choir and the men’s Oktoberfest Singers.

 
Survivors include: his wife Ethel of Remsen, his children, Louie (Deb) Homan of Memphis, TN, Alice (Dave) Elliott of Las Vegas, NM, Mick (Melissa) Homan of Cincinnati, OH, Philip (Katie) Homan of Medina, MN, Angela (Tom) Lalor of Washington, DC.  He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.  His in-laws, Joan Thommes of Omaha, NE, Clarence (Mary) Jo Bueltel of Omaha, NE, Jim (Gretchen) Ortmann of LeMars, IA, Sister Alice and Sister Eleanor of the Sisters of Christian Charity of Wilmette, IL. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

 
Preceded by: his parents, a daughter, Rose Ann, two sisters, Elaine Homan and Marian Frampton, five brothers, Gordon, Donald, Gerald, Robert and Peter.

 
Casket bearers will be Alec Homan, Michael Elliott, Myles Homan, Matt Homan, Sam Lalor, Benner Homan.

 
Honorary bearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters.
