Robert Raymond Meyer

Robert Raymond Meyer, 90, of Remsen, IA, passed away Friday December 6, 2019 in Greenville, South Carolina, surrounded by family at Rolling Green Village Skilled Nursing in Greenville, SC.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2019 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen, with Pastor Alan Cummins officiating. Burial will follow in the Remsen Community Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.  Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7p.m. Thursday, at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.

Robert was born June 14, 1929 to Amy Amelia (Johnson) Meyer and Sydney Edward Meyer in Remsen Iowa.  He was raised in Remsen, and received his education at Remsen Public School, graduating in 1948.  He was known to his friends in town as “Bob” or “Mike” or “Robert”.

Robert married JoAnn Haack on August 20, 1950 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen.  In 1951 he was drafted into the Marines and served as a PFC during the Korean War where he was awarded two purple hearts.  He was MIA twice during his deployment and found recovering from malaria on a Japanese medical ship.   His military service was completed in 1953 stationed in Washington D.C, and though offered a job with the government, he returned to live in Remsen.

In Remsen, he was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad, the town of Remsen as a Police Officer, and at Sioux Tools in Le Mars, IA, where he stayed for 35 years until his retirement.  Bob enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting, and golfing.   He volunteered at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, and as a coach for various sports teams when his boys were young.  Those that knew Bob, knew he rarely slowed down. 

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons Robert K. (Janice) Meyer of Greenville, SC.  Kevin (Brenda) Meyer of Denver, CO; his grandchildren, Robert A. (Sloane) Meyer of Boston, MA, Amy (Eric) Hensley, of Greenville, SC,  Jared Meyer of Denver CO, and Dillon Meyer of Denver, CO; one great-nephew, Scott Meyer, of Denver, CO;  one sister-in-law, Judith Maass of Paullina, IA, and nieces Kendall Carter, and Lynda Meyer.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, wife JoAnn Meyer, brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Margaret Meyer, brother-in-law Wayne Maass, nephews Michael Meyer and Jeffery Lewis.
