Stella Rose Schleis

Stella Rose Schleis, 93, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2016 at home surrounded by family.

Memorial mass will be held at 11:00am Friday, Oct. 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with family and friends with be Friday, Oct. 28, 2016 from 9:00am until service time at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Stella was born on October 3, 1922, in Defiance, Iowa; the daughter of the late Paul and Mary Bissen. She was one of twelve children.

On March 21, 1942 Stella married Leo “Short” Schleis, in South Sioux City. To this union eight children were blessed to the couple. They lived and farmed in the Mapleton area until 1956, when they moved to Harlan where they operated a restaurant until 1970. They moved to Remsen to own and run Mom’s Kitchen until 1977.

Stella was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands Leo Schleis, Lester Nitzschke and Virgil Hodapp; one son Jim Schleis; three brothers Melvin Bissen, Donald Bissen, and Joe Bissen; three sisters, Rita Benjamin, “Sister” Leona (Hildargard) Bissen and Marie Kramer.

Survivors include her three daughters, Nancy (Joe) Gagnon of Baldwin Park, CA, Patsy (Larry) Adams of Shenandoah, TX, and Jeanie Konz of The Woodlands, TX; four sons John Schleis of The Woodlands, TX, Michael Schleis of IA, Robert (Laurie) Schleis of Conroe, TX and Richard Schleis of Vancouver, WA; three sisters, Theresa Simmons of Omaha, NE, Margaret Adams of Omaha, NE, Armella (Germain) Reding of Omaha, NE; two brothers, Paul Jr. (Martha) of Harlan, IA, Kenny (Alma) of Cedar Grove, TN; 26 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
