Vance Allison Harnack

Vance Allison Harnack, 90 years old, of Remsen, IA, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. 


            Memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses 3713 Green Ave, Sioux City, IA.  Burial will be at a later date in the Remsen Community Cemetery.   Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014 at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.  Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Kingdom Hall.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.


            Vance was born June 18, 1924, at LeMars, IA, the son of Allison A. & Clara A. (Ohlendorf) Harnack.  He received his first eight years of education in country school.  Vance graduated from LeMars Central School in 1942.  While attending LeMars Central he was the first President of the newly formed FFA Chapter.  He worked on the farm with his father.


On April 21, 1948 he married Mariann Clara Schmidt at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.  The couple made their home on the family farm, which was known as Al-Van Acres specializing in Registered Angus Cattle (Vance never left the family farm).


          Vance was a Jehovah’s Witness and an elder for 30 years.  He and Mariann worked on many building projects of Kingdom Halls in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Missouri, making many wonderful friendships.  The couple also enjoyed traveling, spending winter trips in Arizona, and traveling on bank sponsored bus trips, along with several trips to New York.


          Survivors include; his wife, Mariann; daughter, Karen Harnack; son, Alan (Melissa) Harnack all of Remsen; son-in-law, W. Shawn Skatges of Sioux City, IA; grandchildren, Aaron J. (Martha) Skatges of Dakota City, NE, Krista (Wyatt) Lara of Louisville, NE, Reece and Peyton Harnack both of Remsen; great-granddaughters, Alyssa, Felisa, Kelsi and Kaitlyn Skatges all of Dakota City, NE.


          Preceded by: his parents, his daughter, LuAnn C. Skatges, grandson, Chase Harnack, father and mother-in-law, John & Clara Schmidt, brothers-in-law, Richard and Ervin Schmidt.
