Vernon N. Hatz

Vernon N. Hatz, 95 years old, of Alton, IA, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, At Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, IA. 
        Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Rev. Terry Roder officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by Floyd Post 200 American Legion.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. & a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
        Vernon was born March 14, 1917, at Remsen, IA, the son of Nick and Mary (Arens) Hatz.  He was raised and educated in Remsen and graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s High School in 1935.  He then owned and operated his own service station in Remsen.  He then had to sell his business when he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corp. on May 28, 1942 and was stationed in the Phillipines.  He was honorably discharged on Nov. 25, 1945 as a Sergeant.  He then moved back to home and spent his working years as a butcher in various local meat lockers and eventually owning his own grocery store/locker called Hatz Frozen Foods in Alton.
        On June 7, 1948 he married Lorraine Thoma at LeMars, IA.
        Vernon was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Floyd Post 200 American Legion.  Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters.
        Survivors include: his wife, Lorraine of Orange City, IA; his daughter, Sue (Bob) Albers of Alton, IA; four grandsons, Troy (Sandy) Albers of Alton, Chris (Amy) Albers of Sioux Falls, SD, Jason (Jody) Albers of Alton, Tom Albers of Alton; seven great-grandchildren.
        Preceded by: his parents, three sisters, Mildred as an infant, Margaret (Jack) Zimmerman and Kathleen Hatz.
        Casket Bearers will be Troy, Chris, Jason and Tom Albers and Nick Delperdang.
