Alfred “Sonny” Sherlock, 86 years old, of Le Mars, IA passed away unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, at his winter residence in Casa Grande, AZ.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Jan. 23, 2021 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA with Father William McCarthy officiating and Father Tim Hogan concelebrating. Burial will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Oyens, IA. Masks and social distance guidelines will be required. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. with a vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. on Friday at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Alfred was born on January 23, 1934, the son of Julius and Anna (Nilles) Sherlock of rural Remsen, and later Le Mars. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1951. Alfred farmed with his parents. He lived with and cared for his parents in their later years on the family farm south of Oyens.
He was a past member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Oyens, and frequented St. Anthony Pauda Church in Casa Grande, AZ. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, and participated in many volunteer jobs at St. Catherine’s school and church in years past. He was the fix-it guy for his siblings and others, and the go-to person to figure out how to tackle a problem. He was always willing to help with their do-it-yourself projects.
He will be truly missed by his siblings and fifty plus nieces and nephews. Survivors include his siblings: Helen Rolling of Kingsley, IA, Loretta ”Tiny” Hoss and, Mary (Bob) Fulton of Le Mars, IA, Julie (Jim) McElhany of Sioux City, IA, Cyril (Phyllis) Sherlock of Fall Brook, CA, Esther (Tom) Shrader of Le Mars, IA and Norine (Keith) Harvey of Remsen, IA; sisters-in-law Zelda Sherlock of Le Mars, IA, and Claudette Sherlock of Jefferson, IA.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings and their spouses: Rose Mary & Paul Kurth, Doris and Kenny Rolfes, Jerry & Judy Sherlock, and Jan & Pat Sherlock; brothers, Ray and LeRoy; and brother’s-in-law Mark Rolling and Richard Hoss; and numerous nieces and nephews.
