Anthony Joseph Newman, age 84 of Alton, Iowa passed away on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023 at Unity Point Health St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, IA.
Memorial mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, IA with Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Visitation with family present will be 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen, IA. Tony was born March 7, 1938 in Saul Ste. Marie Ontario Canada, the son of Edgar & Mary (Bergamin) Newman. He was raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada and attended St. Joseph’s School.
On Sept. 27, 1975, he married Patricia Pottebaum in Sioux City, IA. Tony worked as a construction electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for over 50 years. Over the years he also coached junior hockey in Sioux City, IA and at Prince Rupert, British Columbia in the late 70’s.
Tony was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. He loved his family, hockey and telling stories. In his younger years he enjoyed playing fastpitch softball, playing hockey and Taekwondo. He was not shy about his faith and helped many others with theirs. Prior to his stroke he would wake up very early to work-out and say his prayers. In his later years, he had to settle with just saying his prayers. He was a selfless man who would go without to help others. He would do anything to ensure his family was happy. He was humble, kind and would do anything to help others. Tony was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife Patricia of Alton, IA; his five children; Ryan (Dawn) Newman of Yankton, SD, Lisa Kleinhesselink of Alton, IA & fiancée Ryan VanBeek, David Newman of Alton, IA; Matt (Cara) Newman of Sergeant Bluff, IA , Nikki Newman & fiancée Shane Frank of Sioux City, IA; nine grandchildren, Brianna (Zach), Abby, Drew, Alyssa (Saul), Ethan, Parker, Nolan, Brynlee & Jace; three great-grandchildren, Hadleigh, Beckham & Emersyn; four sisters, June (Gilles) Guindon, Mary Lou (Andy) Kairiss, Sandra (Hank) Baltussen and Val LeClair all of Ontario Canada; two sisters-in-law, Lynda Newman of Ontario Canada, Diane Alesch of Alton, IA; one brother-in-law, Marvin (Annette) Pottebaum of Remsen, IA; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donnie & Eddy Newman; twin sisters who died in infancy, Jean & Judy; two brothers-in-law, Tommy LeClair & Bob Alesch; his father & mother-in-law, Edmund & Verena (Konz) Pottebaum.
