Bernard William Jungers

Bernard William Jungers, age 85 of Hospers, IA passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021 at his home in Hospers surrounded by his family. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2021 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers with Father Dan Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Hospers.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by Reuter Post 423 American Legion of Hospers.  Visitation with family present will be 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, there will be a vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the church.  Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the funeral on Friday.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. 

Bernard was born Sept. 18, 1935 at Hospers, the son of William & Petronella (Stapenhorst) Jungers.  He was raised and educated near Hospers and attended St. Anthony Catholic School.  He served in the Army National Guard from 1953-1954, then in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. 

On June 29, 1955 he married Marlene Groepper at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen.  The couple lived in Limestone, ME until his discharge from the Army.  The couple moved to Remsen where Bernard worked at Wayne Garvin’s Station as a mechanic.  They then moved near Hospers where they farmed until retiring in 2000 and moving into Hospers.   

Bernard was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, past church board member, past Spalding School board Secretary and Knights of Columbus.  He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, spending time with family and traveling, especially to Arizona. 

Survivors include his wife Marlene of Hospers; his children, Vicki (Myron) Holtrop of Sheldon, IA, Jim Jungers of Sheldon, IA, Sharon (John) Nilges of Dakota Dunes, SD, Joseph (Karla) Jungers of Hospers, IA, Leann (Roger) Grave of Hospers, IA, Carla (Russ) Gardner of Cherokee, IA, Kelly Jungers of Tucson, AZ; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Ellen Vortherms of Wilmont, MN, Sr. Theresa Jungers of Dubuque, IA; his brothers, Danny (Phyllis) Jungers of Hospers, IA, Arnie (Bobbie) Jungers of Delaware, OH; his in laws, Jean (Roger) Bird of South Sioux City, NE, Karen (Leo) Freking of Hospers, IA, Renee Krug of Sioux City, IA, Randy (Sharon) Groepper of Le Claire, IA; numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded by his sons, Gary & Mark; his sister, Sr. Margret Jungers; brothers-in-law, Sylvester Vortherms, Eddie Bird, Lloyd Krug; sisters-in-law, Linda Groepper, Patricia (John) Walker; granddaughter, Ashley Holtrop; great-grandson, Cody Holtrop. 

Casket bearers will be, Kyle Jungers, Andrew Nilges, Jacob Jungers, Ryan Jungers, Brian Grave and Scott Ruden.
