Bill was born on September 14, 1942 in Sioux City, IA, to Richard Ellsworth Langley and Gwendolyn Vae Kindig. He was raised in Sioux City Iowa, graduating from Central High school in 1961. He proudly served in the Army National Guard.
On July 16, 1966, he married Mary Ann Kommes at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LeMars, Iowa. Together, they made their home in Sioux City and built a life centered around family, faith, hard work, and love.
Throughout his career, Bill worked for General Motors for many years, with his work taking him to Sioux City, Iowa; Wichita Falls, Texas; and Minneapolis, Minnesota, before his retirement. He also earned multiple certifications in both two-cycle and four-cycle engines.
Working on small engines was much more than a hobby for Bill—it was truly one of his passions. He repaired lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, and just about any other type of small engine that came his way. He became well known for his remarkable ability to “fix them all,” a talent he continued sharing with others well into his late 70s. He also had a deep passion for NASCAR, and was a faithful Dale Earnhardt fan through his entire career.
Bill was a devoted member of Mater Dei Catholic Parish. He faithfully served as an usher for many years and also served for a time as a member of the school board. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA.
Above all else, Bill treasured his family. Few things brought him more happiness than watching his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in their sports, activities, and accomplishments. Family was one of the most important things in Bill’s life, and he never missed an opportunity to make sure those he loved knew just how much they meant to him.
Bill also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. Ice cream, Coca-Cola, and popcorn were favorites and could almost always be found in the house. He took great pride in growing his garden, caring for his lawn, and keeping his home looking its best for everyone who came by. Visitors and passersby knew they were at the right place when they saw his familiar sign: “Bill Street.”
Bill will be remembered for his hardworking hands, his ability to fix nearly anything, his devotion to his faith, and, most importantly, the tremendous love he had for his family.
He will be dearly missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ann; sons, Jeff (Lauri) Langley, Curt (Dovie) Langley; grandchildren, Wesley Langley, Brett Langley, Stacey Langley, Faith (Mike) Thomas, Jordan (Krystal) Langley, Hunter Langley, Shyler Langley; step-grandchildren, Ryan Surber, Bennie Surber, Brent Surber, Dylan Divis and Kalaya Divis; 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Jack (Sheila) Langley, Christine Van Donselaar, Patricia Peterson, Jerry (Amanda) Langley, Lucille Langley-Sampson, and David (Ella) Langley; In-laws, Rich Kommes, Lavonne (Pete) Galles, Loretta Steichen.
