Duane Verdell Case was born on March 4, 1937 in Lake City, Iowa to Arlie and Ada (Pelley) Case. He graduated from Sac City (Iowa) High School in 1955. Following graduation, Duane took a position as a lineman with the electric cooperative in Sac City.
After five years as a lineman, Duane moved to Storm Lake, Iowa to attend Buena Vista College. He was the first to earn an art education degree at Buena Vista. It was there that he met Rosalie Buffum while roller skating. On June 14, 1964, Duane and Rose were united in marriage in the Methodist Church in Newell, Iowa.
Duane’s first job teaching art was in Lakeview and Auburn, Iowa. He and his family moved to Marcus in 1967 where he taught art for a total of 34 years. During many of those years he coached golf. Teaching was never considered work to Duane because he enjoyed his students so much. Summers were spent painting houses and farm buildings with his children’s assistance. He retired from painting three years ago due to heath issues.
Duane was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was an avid bowler and stayed physically active even while spending winters in Sun City West, Arizona. He and Rose enjoyed dining out and going to the library to read. His passion in life was spending time with his family. Attending his children’s activities, camping, fishing and picnics were just a few ways they stayed connected. Everyone will remember his “corny jokes” and his outgoing personality.
Duane is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Rose Case of Marcus, IA; children and their spouses; Aaron and Vickie Case of Chicago, IL, Lauren and Tom Sand of Vermillion, SD, Kristin and Bill Frueh of Jefferson, SD and Bryan and Kari Case of Lake City, IA; 15 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild with one on the way; a sister, Norma Tadlock of Sun City West, AZ; a brother and his wife, Royce and Linda Case of Sac City, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Shirley (William) Kuehn and Audrey (Thomas “Tiny”) Cates; and a brother-in-law, Chuck Tadlock.
