David was born on October 14, 1945, in LeMars, Iowa, to Clarence and Norma (Ludwig) Ahlers. He was raised on the family farm near Remsen, Iowa. He received his education from Remsen St. Mary’s and went on to attend Iowa State University. He proudly served his country in the Iowa National Guard. On August 30, 1975, he married the love of his life, Linda (Lynn) Langel, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LeMars. Together, they built a life centered on family and farming near Remsen, where David spent his career working the land he cherished.
A devoted member of Remsen St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Catholic Order of Foresters. David was also active in his community. He served on the ISU Extension Board, was a member of the Iowa Soybean Association, and the Eagles Club in Le Mars. Dave contributed much of his time to the Remsen-Union Community School District School Board.
Dave’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He treasured days at Okoboji with his wife, children, and grandchildren, and created lasting memories camping at Storm Lake. He loved being on the water—boating, teaching many to water ski with great patience, and continuing to ski himself until the age of 75.
He enjoyed bowling in a men’s league and looked forward each year to attending the Spencer Fair with his best friend, Larry Rodesch. Dave also loved polka dancing, playing two-handed pinochle, and taking spontaneous drives through the countryside with his beloved wife, Lynn.
He was happiest when surrounded by his grandchildren—reading stories, rocking and cuddling, or getting down on the floor to play. Farming was his passion, and he took great pride in sharing his knowledge with his son, Jeremy. Dave was a selfless man who always put others before himself and never wanted anyone to worry or fuss over him.
David is survived by his loving wife, Linda (Lynn) Ahlers; his children: Erin (Christopher) Pick and their daughter Jocelyne of LeMars, Iowa; Nicole (Andrew) Patent and their son Jameson of Randolph, Nebraska; and Jeremy (Jamie) Ahlers and their sons Kaleb and Davis of Remsen, Iowa.
He is also survived by his siblings: Phil (Teryl) Ahlers of Remsen, Iowa; Christine (Scott) Nielsen of Le Mars, Iowa; and Mary Tucker of Remsen, Iowa; along with sisters- and brothers-in-law: Faye Ahlers of LeMars, Iowa; Gary (Cindy) Langel of LeMars, Iowa; Sue (Merle) Huls of LeMars, Iowa; Bruce Langel and Billie Jean Ring of San Antonio, Texas; Kathy Langel of LeMars, Iowa; and Kim Walker of Glenwood, Iowa; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his son, Michael Ahlers; his parents, Clarence and Norma Ahlers; his mother- and father-in-law, Vic and Toots Langel; his brothers, Dan Ahlers and Fred Ahlers; his brother-in-law, Tom Langel; and his nephews, Todd Huls and Doug Tucker.
