David John Waldschmitt, 65 years old, of Remsen, IA died Friday, March 15, 2013 at his home near Remsen, IA, surrounded by his family.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy and Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Following the burial, a luncheon will be served at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2013. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Dave was born on Aug. 4, 1947, at LeMars, IA the son of Ray and Agnes (Freking) Waldschmitt. He was raised in the Remsen area and attended St. Mary’s High School, where he graduated in 1965. He then attended Universal Trade School in Omaha in 1966 for Auto Mechanics. Dave was in the 185th Air National Guard in Sioux City, IA. He served in the Vietnam War from May 8, 1968 through May, 1969.
On June 9, 1973, he married Donna Mae Galles at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. They moved north of Remsen where they farmed for the last 40 years. For the last eleven years he also worked part time at Evans Repair in Remsen.
Dave was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, American Legion Post 220 and VFW Post 3328 of Remsen. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards, bowling, and working on machinery. He loved spending time with his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed getting together with his Air Force Buddies.
Survivors include: his wife Donna of Remsen; their six children, Rick (Angela) Waldschmitt, Angie (Bart) Brownmiller, Rod (Jessica) Waldschmitt all of Remsen, Steve (Abby) Waldschmitt of Cedar Falls, IA, Luke Waldschmitt, Jessica (Tim) Osterman both of Remsen; Grandkids, Skyler, Levi, Landon and Tyten Waldschmitt, Alex, Brette and Damen Brownmiller, Alyssa Means, Sophie Waldschmitt and Reid Waldschmitt; mother-in-law, Marge (Konz) Galles of Remsen; three brothers, Jerry (Jean) Waldschmitt of Remsen, Jim (Elaine) Waldschmitt of Johnston, IA, Tom (Margaret) Waldschmitt of Ankeny, IA; one sister, Jane (Phil) Ortmann of Sioux City, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry Galles of Marcus, IA, Sharon (Tom) Harpenau of Alton, Charlie (Jan) Galles of Remsen, Janet (Ric) Hansen of Alton, IA; Judy (Dennis) Bollmeyer of Hinton, IA, Linda Galles and Terry Feder of Struble, IA; several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Sr. Shirley Waldschmitt O.S.F., Father-in-law, Marvin Galles and brother-in-law, David Galles.
