Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers with Father Dan Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Hospers. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, there will be a Knights of Columbus rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the church in Hospers. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Don was born on December 21, 1931, to Nick and Rose (Hoffman) on the farm near Hospers where he was raised. He was educated at St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Hospers. In 1953 he was drafted to the US Army and served eighteen months in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1955.
On April 17, 1956 he married Georgia Lechtenberg at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, IA. They raised their nine children on the family farm until moving to Hospers in 1996.
Don was a life-long member of St. Anthony Catholic Church where he stayed active as an usher, lector and choir member. He was a member of the Reuter Post 423 American Legion of Hospers, Disabled Veterans, Knights of Columbus (past Grand Knight), VFW Post 5347 (Post Commander), Sheldon Farmer’s Co-op Oil Co (Board Member) and Spalding Catholic School Board member. He enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting, fishing, traveling, and especially visiting with family and friends.
Don is survived by his wife Georgia of 66 years of Hospers; nine children, Paula (Roger) Pick of Harlan, IA, Joyce (Rick) Cordle of Blair, NE, Jeanne (Dr. William) Ellermeyer of Southlake, TX, Ken (Alicia Ottis) Becker of Peoria, AZ, Ann (Bob) Kalb of Minneapolis, MN, Bob (Amy Mitchell) Becker of Minneapolis, MN; Nancy (Guy) Excell of Hemet, CA, Mark (Julie Moret) Becker of Sheldon, IA, Julie (Steve) Statz of Sioux Falls, SD; nineteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Also surviving him is his sister, Bernice (Gordon) Schneider of Granville, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law Lorraine Becker, Norma Schuster, Lorna Blumeyer, Jim (Cari) Lechtenberg, Mary (Orville) Pottebaum, Janet (Jeff) Zwagerman, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Tanner Becker; brothers Vincent (Lorraine) Becker, Lloyd Becker and sisters Rosella (Arnold) Vortherms, and Florence Becker in infancy; in-laws Orville Schuster, Dan Lechtenberg, Jerry Hatting, Verdeen Blumeyer; and Georgia’s parents Leo and Cleo Lechtenberg.
Casket bearers will be Ryan Pick, Will Ellermeyer, Sterling Boom, Michael Statz, Anthony Kalb and Patrick Kalb.
Honorary bearers will be Stephanie Keen, Katie Flynn, Lindsay Heilman, Brittney Koory, Rory Brumbaugh, Blake Becker, Claire Kalb, John Kalb, Nic Kalb, Nic Excell, Elle Becker and Mary Kate Statz.
Memorials in Don’s name can be directed to St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers or Sioux Center Hospice in Sioux Center, IA.
