Dorothy Ann (Rodenbour) Jonas, 95 years old of Remsen, IA, died Wednesday, April 30th, 2025. She was surrounded by her children and passed away peacefully while they prayed over her.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 5, 2025 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. Timothy Pick officiating and Deacon Doug Heeren assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with family present will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Dorothy was born December 2, 1929, in LeMars, IA to John and Helen (Marso) Rodenbour. She was an only child and was raised in the Struble area until she moved to Remsen when she was 7 years old. She attended Remsen St. Mary’s and graduated in 1947. She attended Briar Cliff College, then worked at the West Iowa Telephone Company in Remsen.
She married Peter Jonas Jr. on December 22, 1951, at 8:30 am. It was -18 degrees on their wedding day. Pete and Dorothy lived in Ft. Riley, KS for their first year of marriage until Pete was honorably discharged from the Army. They then moved to the family farm she grew up on north of Remsen and continued to live there until 1999 when they moved to Remsen.
Dorothy was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church her entire life. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and the St. Mary’s Guild.
Dorothy enjoyed golfing with her friends and neighbors, gardening and bowling. She was walking for exercise long before walking was cool. She loved to travel and was known for her pies and her cooking skills.
Survivors include her children Jeff Jonas of Remsen, IA; Debbie Boccumini (Victor) of Port Orange, FL; Andrea Mai of Orange City, IA; Mary Stene (Jim) of Lenexa, KS; Matt Jonas (Carol Braun) of Remsen, IA; Becky Engel (Matt) of Coto de Caza, CA; Nikki Schnepf (Brian) of Shawnee, KS. Grandchildren include Steve Jonas, Audra Erk, Rusty Jonas, Amber Jonas, Angela Jonas, Deanna Thomas, Erica Harrell, Anita Mai, Theresa Budden, Patrick Mai, Marcus Mai, Carly Bullinger, Dalton Stene, Evan Engel, Jason Engel, Max Schnepf and Madeline Schnepf. She had 25 Great-Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her husband Peter Jonas Jr; her parents John and Helen Rodenbour, her daughter-in-law Sharon Jonas and nine brother and sisters-in-law.
Casket Bearers are her 8 grandsons: Steve Jonas, Rusty Jonas, Patrick Mai, Marcus Mai, Dalton Stene, Evan Engel, Jason Engel and Max Schnepf.
