Doug was born on September 3, 1942 to Ray and Mary (Balster) Lauters. He shared his birthday with his mother and a granddaughter. Raised in Marcus, he graduated from Holy Name High School in 1960. Doug met the love of his life, Hildegarde Ullrich on a blind date. They married on February 8, 1964 in Mapleton, IA and were blessed to spend 61 years together.
Doug and Heidi spent most of their married life in the Marcus area. Doug was a master of many trades. He spent 6 years in the Army National Guard, farmed, and owned a meat locker. He worked in banking in Anthon, Cherokee, and Elgin prior to returning to Marcus to retire close to family and friends.
Doug participated in a multitude of athletics throughout his life including basketball, softball at Kahl’s pasture, bowling and golf. He also spent many Friday evenings assisting in the Eagle’s Nest at Marcus football games.
Doug was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church, actively participating in various ministries within. He served on Pork Producers, and was one of the few men to participate in both the centennial and sesquicentennial Brothers of the Brush. Doug was an avid golfer, a card shark, an award-winning wine maker, a gardener, a craftsman, and always appreciated the challenge of a good puzzle. Doug loved spending time with his family and friends and could often be found doing so around the grill. He cooked to taste rather than from a recipe (especially his stuffing), and preferred to use a beer as a timer instead of a clock. Doug was most often found smiling and could never turn down a good friendly conversation.
Doug and Heidi were blessed with a large family. Together they have son Dean (Lisa) Lauters of Sergeant Bluff, IA, son Tony (Terri) Lauters of Hawarden, IA, daughter Lynne (Alan Ahrenholtz) Glackin of Woodbine, IA and son Denny Lauters who went ahead of Doug to meet God in 1991. Extended family includes 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren: Austin and Angie Lauters; Brian, Taylor, Aaron, and Evan Lauters; Jodi (Cody) Malone and their children Easton and Emberleigh, Patrick Glackin; and Alexandria (Dakota) Drenth and their children Drake, Alba, and baby on the way.
Doug’s living siblings include Audrey (Tony) Delperdang of Remsen, IA, Marlene Boyle of Danbury, IA, Dan (LuAnn) Lauters of Garner, IA, and Larry (Sue) Lauters of Runnells, IA.
Doug is preceded in death by his son Denny, son-in-law Mark Glackin, and siblings/spouses Jimmy Lauters, Jeannine (Carl) Dreckman, Pete (Rosie) Lauters, Bob (Barb) Lauters, Jim Boyle, and Candice Lauters.
Casket bearers: Brian Lauters, Aaron Lauters, Evan Lauters, Austin Lauters, Patrick Glackin, Cody Malone, Dakota Drenth, Matt Pellettiere, Easton Purcell, Drake Drenth
