Florence C. Pottebaum, 87 of Alton, IA died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Orange City Health System Hospital, in Orange City, IA.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, IA with Rev. Paul Eisele officiating & Rev. Richard Ball concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Alton, IA. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012. There will be a parish rosary at 5p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.
Florence was born October 5, 1924, near Hospers, IA the daughter of Adolph & Mary (Friederich) Fischer. When her mother passed away in 1933 her father married Mary Reichle who had seven children. The family moved to a farm near Granville. She graduated from Paullina High School in 1942. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and received her education certificate. She taught rural school for 2 years.
She married Ferd Pottebaum on November 21, 1950 at Granville. The couple made their home in Alton. In 1954 they moved to the Pottebaum farm south of Alton where they farmed until 1980 when they retired and moved into town. Ferd died November 13, 1997.
Florence was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, church guild, St. Mary’s Rosary Society & American Legion Auxilliary. She was very devoted to her family & church.
Survivors include; her ten children, Bev (Charles) Brewer of Sioux City, IA, Donna Pottebaum of Sioux Falls, SD, Tom M. (Karen) Pottebaum of Granville, IA, Gordon (Lou Ann) Pottebaum of Sheldon, IA, Leonard Pottebaum, Dolores Ruba, Merlin Pottebaum, Michael H. (Julie) Pottebaum all of Alton, Rose (Mike) Brady, Mary Ellen (Paul) Wilkens both of Marcus, IA; 13 Grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; her brother Robert (Lorraine) Fischer; her sister Lorraine Becker both of Granville, IA; 2 step sisters, Catherine (Clarence) Pohlen of Hospers, IA, Bertie Full of Canby, MN; one brother-in-law, Jerry Meylor of Quimby, IA, one step sister, Inez Reichle of Orange City, IA; 5 sisters-in-law, Irma Dreckman of Pipestone, MN, Armella Homan, Carol Jean (Dan) Pick both of Remsen, Maxine Pottebaum of Alton, Esther Pottebaum of LeMars, IA.
Preceded by: her parents, her step mother, one brother, Clarence Fischer, 2 sisters, Lillian Von Arb & Irene Meylor, 2 step sisters, Angie Grady & Delia Alsup, 3 step brothers, John, Harold & Lawrence Reichle.
Casket Bearers will be her grandsons Jeffrey, Tyler & Ben Brady, Corey Pottebaum, Kyle Ruba & Rod Winkel.
Honorary Bearer, Beau Zorgdrager who is currently serving in the US Army.
