Florence Thole, 88 years old, of Fremont, NE and formerly of Alton, IA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Fremont Health surrounded by her family.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Aug 1, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation with family present will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2016. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. & a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Florence was born Aug. 7, 1927, on a farm outside of Alton, IA, the daughter of Anton & Anna (Pick) Pottebaum. Florence attended St. Mary’s Academy in Alton. After her schooling Florence worked as a mother’s helper for relatives and friends.
On Mar. 30, 1948 she married Ray Thole of St. Cloud, MN, at St. Mary’s Church in Alton, IA. The couple then made their home in Alton. She later worked as a postal clerk in the Alton and Sheldon Post Offices.
Florence was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a past member of the St. Mary’s Guild. She served as the house cleaner for the St. Mary’s Rectory for many years. Florence served as a leader for Cub Scouts, Bluebirds and the Camp Fire Girls. She was an avid sewer and quilter and loved to garden and travel. After Ray’s death on Jan. 9, 1986, Florence spent her winters in Lake Havasu, AZ until moving to Valley, NE in 2013 and later moving to Providence Place in Fremont, NE.
Survivors include her children: Mary Jane (John) Fryberger of Yorba Linda, CA, Janet (Gary) Brown of Waterloo, NE, Darlene (Galen) Dunklau of Arlington, NE, Marvin (Patricia) Thole of Jacksonville, FL, Steven (Kelly) Thole of Elkhorn, NE, Michelle (Rick) Budden of Lake Havasu, AZ; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; Florence is also survived by her siblings: Berdella (Herb) Schueller of Primghar, IA; Mary (Art) Walker of The Villages, FL., and brothers: Ivan (Clare) Pottebaum of Granville, IA.; Isidore (Carol) Pottebaum of LeMars, IA., Arlin (Marlene) Pottebaum of Hospers, IA.; and Orville (Mary) Pottebaum of Alton, IA.
Preceded in death by: her husband, her parents, and brothers, Anton Jr. (Tony), Howard and Eugene; and sisters, Bernice Block, Tarsella Probst and Donna Rae Krogman.
Casket bearers will be Greg Brown, James Timperley, Keegan Budden, Taylor Budden, Jeremy Thole, Jamie Thole, A.J. Dunklau and Tyler Dunklau.
