George Leo Wittkop, age 91, of Remsen, IA passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Memorial mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, with Rev. Timothy Pick officiating and Deacon Doug Heeren assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with the family present will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen with a rosary and prayer service at 5 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
George was born Jan. 12, 1932 in rural Remsen, IA, the son of George & Elizabeth (Mack) Wittkop. He was raised in Remsen and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School graduating in 1949. After high school he worked construction and also worked at SuperSweet Feeds and Wilson Foods.
On Nov. 19, 1960 he married Betty Heidesch at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. The couple made their home in Remsen where they raised their children and continued to live here during their retirement.
George enjoyed watching whatever sport that was in season, especially the Vikings and the Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed going to Vegas, playing video poker and taking his daily walks.
George was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen all his life.
Survivors include his wife Betty of Remsen; his five children, Dave (Mary Ann) Wittkop of San Francisco, CA, John Wittkop of Johnston, IA, Joe (Julie) Wittkop of Ankeny, IA, Lisa (Tom) Groepper of Council Bluffs, IA, Jane (Bill) Scheitler of Le Mars, IA; 10 grandchildren, Rebekah Wittkop, Matt, Megan & Jenna Wittkop, Nick, Brad & Abby Groepper, Mike, Shelby & Molly Scheitler; 5 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jim (Mary) Wittkop of Broomfield, CO, Wayne (Judy) Wittkop of Le Mars, IA; two sisters, Caryl Dunne of Sioux City, IA, Mary (Gary) Lohff of Yankton, SD; two sisters-in-law, Audrey Stromberg & Marlene Westphalen.
Preceded by his parents; brothers, Irvin (Alice) Wittkop, Bob (Myrt) Wittkop; sister, Noreen Sims; sisters-in-law, Jeanette (Jim) Boever, Shirley (Don) Kunkel; brothers-in-law, Jerry Dunne & Mark Stromberg.
