Gladys Means, 94, of Sergeant Bluff, IA, formerly of Marcus, IA, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Floyd Senior Living in Sergeant Bluff, IA.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, with Pastor Kevin Roop officiating. Burial will follow at Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be from 12:30-1:15 p.m. at the church. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Marcus, IA. www.fischfh.com

She was Born October 22, 1931, in Marcus, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harold and Alice (Dunn) Geringer.

Gladys grew up in Marcus and graduated from Marcus Community School in 1949. On October 1, 1949, she married Vernon Means at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Marcus, where Gladys raised her family and became a well-known and much-loved member of the community.

Over the years Gladys worked at Nagle’s Department Store, served as a cook for Marcus Community Schools, contributed to the Marcus News Society Page, and cared for family members and neighbors. She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, participating in the Ladies’ Aid Society, the Lamp Lighters, and the choir.

Gladys was best known for her cooking and baking, her hands-on gardening and quilting, and her love of travel, music festivals and camping. She cherished time spent supporting her children and attending her grandchildren’s activities. Her family remembers her warmth, practical kindness and steady presence.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Deb (Mike) Heath of Sioux City, IA; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 8 Great-great-grandchildren; and other extended family and many friends whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Means; sons, David, Dr. Dennis and Duane (Judy) Means; her parents, Harold and Alice Geringer; and brothers Don, Chuck and Steve Geringer.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hospice of The Midwest along with Floyd Senior Living for their compassionate care.
