Gordon George Schneider, age 90 of Granville IA died Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Orange City Area Health System in Orange City, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, Iowa with Rev. Daniel Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Granville, Iowa. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Granville Veterans. Visitation with family present will be 4-6:30 p.m. on Friday, there will be a Knights of Columbus rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. Visitation will resume from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. www.fischfh.com
Gordon was born on July 2nd, 1933, to George and Catherine (Spieler) Schneider of Granville, IA. He was raised in Granville and attended St Joseph Catholic School in Granville, graduating in 1951.
He enlisted in the Army in January 1955 and was honorably discharged in January 1957. He was stationed at Ft Bliss, TX.
On January 7th, 1980, he married Bernice (Becker) Lechtenberg at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He was on the St. Joseph’s Church Board and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus. He also served as Mayor and was a City Council member of Granville.
Outside of his farming, his faith and family, Gordon had many other hobbies and talents. He loved photography. He photographed over 300 weddings and donated over 40 years of his time, teaching photography at Spalding High School. He also had a collection of over 350 antique cameras that he was very proud of. Gordon’s 1956 T-Bird was his pride and joy. He loved driving his T-Bird and enjoyed all the “thumbs up” he would get when driving by folks. Gordon enjoyed traveling with his wife, Bernice, his family and friends. He would often say he and Bernice had been in all 50 states…twice. The annual Ponca State Park trip was a tradition that Gordon loved sharing with his family for over 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice of 44 years; his stepdaughter, Lynn (Dan) Herrington of Council Bluffs, IA; 4 grandchildren, Matt (Rachel) Herrington of Elkhorn, NE, Chris (Bailey) Herrington of Omaha, NE, Karissa (Jaden) Holton of Iowa City, IA and Katie Herrington and her fiancé Cole Osterberg of Omaha, NE; 5 great-grandchildren, Lily, Veda, Carter, Ethan and Harvey.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents George and Catherine; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline (Hilary) Klein and Ruth (Bentley) Morris.
Casket bearers will be Matt Herrington, Chris Herrington, Jaden Holton, Cole Osterberg, Dave Klein and Bob Becker.
