Janette “Jan” Raye Schneider age 87, of Alton, IA, passed away on June 10, 2026.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa with Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation with family present will be 9-10:15 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church in Alton. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. www.fischfh.com

Jan was born on July 13, 1938, to Harold and Lola (Suedbeck) Reese. She was raised in Adrian, MN, and graduated from St. Adrian High School in 1956. Following graduation, she attended business school in Minneapolis, MN.

Jan began her professional career working for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in Chicago, IL. She later returned to Minnesota, where she worked for Prudential in Minneapolis and Worthington State Bank in Worthington.

On September 23, 1961, Jan married the love of her life, John “Jack” Schneider. The couple initially made their home in Sheldon, IA. In 1967, they moved to the Schneider family farm near Alton, where they built a life centered on family, faith, and community. In 1987, Jan and Jack moved into Alton.

Jan was employed at Alton Savings Bank, later known as Community Bank, where she faithfully served customers and colleagues for 26 years until her retirement in 2003. Following retirement, she remained active in volunteer work and was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found great joy in worship, fellowship, and serving others through her church and community.

Jan will be remembered for her kindness, strong work ethic, and unwavering devotion to her family. She valued the friendships she built throughout her life and found joy in helping others and being present for those she loved. She especially loved her time playing cards with the girls and never giving up on the Minnesota Vikings.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” Schneider; her parents, Harold and Lola Reece; her brother, Ron; and her sister, Glenda.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Gaylen Schneider and his wife, Julie, of Alton, IA; Dawn Mercier and her husband, Dave, of Gardner, KS; Renae Hinrichsen and her husband, Patrick, of Sioux City, IA; and Layne Schneider and his wife, Monica, of Omaha, NE.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren +2: Ashley List and her husband, Michael, of Sioux City, IA (Aiden, Connor, Brandon, Ethan); Heather Whitmore and her husband, Matt, of Omaha, NE (Allie, Natalie); Nathan Schneider and his wife, Maggie, of Whitewood, SD (Viva June, Jack, Stetson + 1); Nic Schneider and his wife, Riley, of Arlington, SD (Sadie Jo, Emmie Mae +1); Steven Mercier of Kansas City, MO; Taylor Deal and her husband, Brandon, of Lenexa, KS (Charlotte); Alec Mercier and his fiancée, Allie, of Ogden, UT; Mitchell Hinrichsen and his wife, Chelsea, of St. Louis, MO (Rupert); Shelby Hackett and her husband, Mitch, of Omaha, NE (Ronan, Clara); Bryce Hinrichsen and his wife, Bailey, of Methwold, UK (Brooklyn, Thea, Taytum); and Vivian Schneider of Omaha, NE.

Casket bearers will be Ashley List, Heather Whitmore, Nathan Schneider, Nic Schneider, Steven Mercier, Taylor Deal, Mitchell Hinrichsen, Shelby Hackett, Vivian Schneider.

Honorary bearers will be Alec Mercier, Bryce Hinrichsen.

Jan’s legacy lives on through the family she cherished, the friendships she nurtured, her faith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and the community she faithfully served throughout her life. Her greatest joy was her family, and she treasured every opportunity to gather with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren celebrating their accomplishments and sharing in life’s special moments.
