Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA with Father Timothy Pick officiating and Deacon Doug Heeren assisting. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa. Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 both of Remsen. Visitation with family present will be 4-7p.m. on Tuesday, there will be a parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Funeral will be live-streamed at www.fischfh.com
Joe was born March 20, 1936 in Emmetsburg, IA, the son of James & Marie (Martini) Kane. He was raised on the family farm near Cylinder, IA. He received his education from Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1954. Joe served the US Army from 1954 until 1956.
On June 3, 1959 he married Mary Kerwick at St. Thomas Church in Emmetsburg, IA. The couple resided in Wayne, NE until 1960 when Joe graduated from Wayne State College. Following graduation, he accepted a teaching position at Remsen Community School and taught Junior High. Joe also received his master’s degree in administration from Northwest Missouri State. He became the first Remsen-Union High School Principal and Middle School Principal. Joe was also the driver’s education instructor for many years. He spent his entire career with Remsen-Union until retiring in 1991. After his retirement he continued driver’s education and bartended at just about every bar in Remsen.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. He was a past board member of the Remsen City Park, Remsen Utility and Remsen Golf Course. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, golf league, sportsman club, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife Mary of Remsen; daughter-in-law, Laurie Kane of Omaha, NE; grandson, Justin Kane of Phoenix, AZ; two granddaughters, Kaylee (Austen) Newcomer of Fort Bennington, GA, Allison Kane of Omaha, NE; brother, Robert Kane of Des Plaines, IL.
He was preceded by, his son, David Kane; his parents, James & Marie Kane; brother, Leo (Phyllis) Kane; sister, Jeannine (Ron) Snavely.
Casket bearers will be Rich Arens, Carl Staab, Al Went, Russ Delperdang, Mike Tritz and Justin Kane.
