John Leo Schleis, 69 of Remsen, IA, passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, IA.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with family present will be Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016 from 4-8 p.m., there will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the family.
John was born on January 28, 1947, at Mapleton, IA; the son of the late Leo and Stella (Bissen) Schleis. He was raised and educated in Mapleton, Harlan and Panama, IA. He moved to Remsen in 1970. On Nov. 27, 1975 he married Barbara Konz. In 1994 he moved back to Harlan, IA. In 2002 he moved to Texas and just recently he moved back to Remsen.
John enjoyed playing cards, bingo and watching sports. Watching soap operas with his mother, teaching his grandkids to cheat at cards. His favorite saying was “Whatever”. He was very proud of his grandchildren’s accomplishments. He cut out every article on them and kept them in a book.
John was preceded in death by his parents, one premature child, brother Jim, 2 step dad’s Lester Nitzschke and Virgil Hodapp.
Survivors include his daughter, Monica (Chad) Gravenish of Remsen; 3 grandchildren, MacKenzie Schleis, Maci and Caleb Gravenish; three sisters, Nancy (Joe) Gagnon of Baldwin Park, CA, Patsy (Larry) Adams of Shenandoah, TX, and Jeanie Konz of The Woodlands, TX; three brothers, Michael Schleis of IA, Robert (Laurie) Schleis of Conroe, TX and Richard Schleis of Vancouver, WA.
Casket bearers will be Richard Schleis, Jesse DeGroot, Chad Gravenish, Larry Adams, Casey Penning and Todd Nothem.
