Leo D. Goergen

Leo D. Goergen, 98 years old, of Granville, IA, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, IA. 

          Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with Rev. Terry Roder officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Granville.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, 2014.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. led by the Catholic Order of Foresters, and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

          Leo was born April 3, 1916, at rural Alton, IA, the son of  Michael and Susanne (Schumacher) Goergen.  He was raised in the Granville area and was educated at St. Joseph School in Granville.

          On April 25, 1949 he married Bernice Jungers at Granville.  The couple farmed near Granville with their seven children, where he enjoyed farming, fixing things and tinkering in the shop.

          Leo was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, church men’s choir and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed bowling, card club, sing alongs and social outings with friends. He also had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include: his seven children, Pat Meyer, Steve (Rose) Goergen both of Omaha, NE, Jim (Laurie) Goergen, Clarice (Larry) Reed both of Minneapolis, MN, Marilyn (Bob) Shroyer of Homer, AK, Mark (Marge) Goergen of Alton, IA, Dan (Carla) Goergen of Granville, IA; 13 grandchildren, Spencer (Leslie), Monica & Terry Shroyer, Rachel Meyer, Natalie (Andy) Matz, Jessie, Jackie, Kelsey, Michaela, Jacob, Tailor, Jade & Sage Goergen, Cassie, Mariah & Kristina Reed, Great grand-children Ethan and August Shroyer;  one brother, Ray (Ivy) Goergen of Marshall, MN; one brother-in-law, Herb Jungers of Boston, MA; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Goergen of Castle Rock, CO, Patricia Jungers of Hospers, IA, Eleanor Jungers of Sheldon, IA.

          Preceded in death by: his parents, his wife, brothers, Joseph (Margaret), Ernest, Norbert (Cecelia), Emil, and Otto Goergen: one sister Ann (Marcel) Klein.

          Casket bearers will be Duane Niichel, John Klein, Joe Hunt, Tom Jungers, Roger Goergen, and Alan Goergen.
