Leon Meis, 80, a longtime resident of Granville and Alton, died peacefully at Good Samaritan in LeMars on January 1, 2014.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, IA with Rev. Gerald Hartz officiating & Rev. Terry Roder, Rev. Paul Eisele, Rev. Robert Gralapp, & Msgr. Kenneth Seifried concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Alton, IA. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.
Leon was born January 26, 1933, at Le Mars, IA the son of Leo and Tillie (Heidesch) Meis.
He married Ruth Henrich on February 16, 1953 at Alton. The couple made their home on a farm near Granville and farmed for 54 years before moving into Alton in 2007. Leon was a loving and devoted husband for 59 years, and an amazing father to his four children.
Leon & Ruth were avid and active supporters of Spalding Catholic as well as their church. Leon was involved in many philanthropic projects and served on numerous boards. He adored his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include; his four children, Paula (Dave) Langel of LeMars, Mark (Judy) Meis of Alton, Barb Meis of Laguna Niguel, CA and Kris (Bill) Koopman of LeMars; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grand-grandchildren, brother-in-law Ed (Rita) Henrich, sister-in-law Mary Sue (Carl) Sierp and Millie Langel.
Preceeded by: his loving wife, Ruth, his parents, his father and mother-in-law, George & Lillian Henrich, sister Clarice Langel and brother -in-law, Roman Langel.
Casket bearers will be Mick & Ryan Langel, Chad & Dean Meis, Toby Scheitler & Aaron Culler.
Honorary bearers will be Rick Logan, Brent De Rocher, Ryan Newman, Tyler Slate, Pat & Mike Waite.
