Leona Goebel

Leona Goebel, 86 years old, of Granville, IA, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA.  
    Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with Rev. Richard Ball officiating and Rev. William McCarthy.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Granville.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
    Leona was born April 11, 1924, at rural Remsen, IA, the daughter of Leo & Marie (Wohles) Thommes.  She was raised in Remsen area & received her education at both the rural school system and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Remsen.  She then spent several years working in farm homes in the Remsen & Granville area.  From 1941 to 1943 she was employed as a nurse’s aide at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars, IA and then from 1943 until her marriage she was employed at Meis and O.P. Skaggs Grocery Store in LeMars.  
    On Jan. 29, 1946 she married Magnus Goebel at LeMars, IA.  They made their home two miles north of Granville where they were engaged in farming for 64 years up until the time of Magnus’s death Sept. 21, 2010.  Leona entered the Happy Siesta on Oct. 15, 2007.  They loved sitting together holding hands and enjoying each other’s company.
    She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Church Guild.  Besides caring for her family, home & garden over the years she enjoyed selling Avon, Fulller Brush & Figurettes.  As a hobby she found time to make quilts for her children & grandchildren.  She looked forward to yearly vacations with Magnus to Florida.  A favorite past time for her & Magnus was playing cards, having coffee & cookies with family & friends.  Leona will be remembered for her smile, her laughter & her chocolate chip cookies.
    Survivors include; Seven children, Leo Goebel & his wife Jackie (Gregory) of Vincent, IA, Robert Goebel & his wife Rita (Pageler) of Granville, Diane (Goebel) Heuertz of Remsen, Mary Ann (Goebel) Van Surksum & her husband Roger of Pensacola, FL, Donald Goebel & his wife Marian (Pottebaum) of Sioux Falls, SD, Leonard Goebel of De Soto, KS, Carol (Goebel) Oolman & her husband Jon of Lead, SD; 21) Grandchildren; 32) Great-grandchildren; 3) Sisters Katherine Dreckman & her husband Cletus of LeMars, IA, Vitelina Penning & her husband Andrew of Granville, Dorothy Tillotson of Rockford, IL, 2) Brothers-in-law, Firman Goebel & his wife Rosanne of Worthington, MN, John Gerald Goebel & his wife Mary Ann of Granville; 5) Sisters-in-law, Joan Thommes of Omaha, NE, Joan Loutsch & her husband Ray of Oyens, Arlene McDermott of Kingsley, IA, Mary Estella Murphy of Cherokee, IA, Angeline Goebel of Worthington, MN.
    Preceded by: her parents, One brother, Bill Thommes;  4) Brothers-in-law, Odilo, Ivan & Linus Goebel, Don Tillotson 1)Sister-in-law, Vivian & her husband Pete Homan; 
    Casket Bearers will be, Greg & Bill Penning, Gary Dreckman, Fran & Hank Goebel, Brad Tillotson.
