Magnus Hy. (Henry) Goebel, 91 years old, of Granville, IA, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Graveside military rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 & American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville.
Magnus was born Jan. 23, 1919, at rural Granville, IA, the son of John & Martha (Bernard) Goebel. He was raised in Granville area & attended St. Joseph Catholic School at Granville. He then assisted his father in farming until he entered the US Army on Aug. 19, 1942. He served during WWII in the European Theatre of Operations receiving The Purple Heart and Bronze Star & five Campaign Stars for service in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe & Rhineland.
On Jan. 29, 1946 he married Leona Thommes at LeMars, IA. They made their home two miles north of Granville where they were engaged in farming for 64 years up until the time of his death. Magnus entered the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Jan. 2010 where he devoted his time and love to his wife Leona. They loved sitting together holding hands and enjoying each other’s company.
Magnus was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. V.F.W. & American Legion. He is most remembered by his children for being honest, hard-working and for his faith in God.
Survivors include; His wife Leona of Remsen; Seven children, Leo Goebel & his wife Jackie (Gregory) of Vincent, IA, Robert Goebel & his wife Rita (Pageler) of Granville, Diane (Goebel) Heuertz of Remsen, Mary Ann (Goebel) Van Surksum & her husband Roger of Pensacola, FL, Donald Goebel & his wife Marian (Pottebaum) of Sioux Falls, SD, Leonard Goebel of De Soto, KS, Carol (Goebel) Oolman & her husband Jon of Lead, SD; 21) Grandchildren; 32) Great-grandchildren; 2) Brothers, Firman Goebel & his wife Rosanne of Worthington, MN, John Gerald Goebel & his wife Mary Ann of Granville; 3) Sisters, Joan Loutsch & her husband Ray of Oyens, Arlene McDermott of Kingsley, IA, Mary Estella Murphy of Cherokee, IA; 5) Sisters-in-law, Angeline Goebel of Worthington, MN, Katherine Dreckman & her husband Cletus of LeMars, IA, Vitelina Penning & her husband Andrew of Granville, Dorothy Tillotson of Rockford, IL, Joan Thommes of Omaha, NE.
