Manfred Schmidt, 82 years old, of Remsen, IA passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2012 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Lemars, IA.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument with Pastor Dennis Martens officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Manfred was born on Dec. 31, 1930, the son of Paul & Martha (Theime) Schmidt at Landeschut, Germany. He was raised and educated in Landeschut and completed 8 years of school. In 1944 he went to West Germany where he worked as a farmhand. He came to America in March of 1952 and settled in Sutherland, IA where he worked as a farmhand. In August he met F.W. Daubendiek and was offered a position with the telephone company as a telephone lineman. He worked his way up to foreman and cable splicer. He was employed by West Iowa Telephone Company for 40 years.
On May 12, 1956 he married Rosy Krohn at the St. Mary’s Rectory in Remsen. He enjoyed camping, gardening, cooking, woodworking and playing pinochle.
Survivors include: his wife Rosy of Remsen; seven children, Paul (Deb) Schmidt of Granville, IA, Richard (Lori) Schmidt of Marcus, IA, Tim Schmidt of Granville, Bob (Dawn) Schmidt of Waterloo, NE, Heidi (Jim) Greiner of Sioux City, IA, Tony (Kelly) Schmidt of Alton, IA, Steve (Lisa) Schmidt of Remsen; 26 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Pat Brady of Marcus, IA, Celine (John) Pedersen of Marcus, IA.
Preceded in death by, his parents, one brother Paul, two sisters, Greta and Hanna, a grandson Nic Gergen, two great-grandchildren, Courtney Greiner and Jay Keiss, brother-in-law, Phil Brady.
