Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa with Father Timothy Pick officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa. Visitation with family present will be 4-7p.m. on Thursday, there will be a parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. Visitation will resume from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Friday at the church. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
She was born on November 16, 1933 to Marion & Ellaine (Franck) Bird. She was raised in Marcus, Iowa and received her education at Holy Name Catholic School graduating in 1951.
Her marriage to Aloysius M. Gengler took place on July 14, 1958 at Dakota City, NE. They farmed near Remsen until retiring and moving into Remsen in April 1985. Al passed away September 23, 2000. On November 30, 2013 she was united in marriage to Ken Kohler. They resided north of Remsen. They moved to Bavarian Meadows on December 1, 2022. Ken passed away on January 13, 2023.
She was a member of Christian Mothers, serving first as Treasurer, then Vice-President and President, Catholic Daughters of America, and Happy Siesta Auxiliary where she did volunteer work.
She dearly loved spending time with her children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. She loved them all. Also enjoyed old-time dancing and the Oktoberfest for which she was connected from the beginning. She taught countless Remsen youth how to dance the polka. She also enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards, making & decorating cakes, and crocheting.
In 2006 she was named Remsen Citizen of the Year. In 2014 She was honored to be the Queen of the Remsen Quasquicentennial.
Survivors include her children; Bob (Doris) Gengler, Dan (Suzie) Gengler, both of Remsen, IA; daughter-in-law Ann Gengler of Oyens, IA; son-in-law Henry Canup of Edgewater, FL; Mike Gengler of Brunsville, IA; Carole (Dick) Ludwig of Sioux City, IA; Carla (John) Weber of Marcus, IA; Karyn (Steven) Flaspohler of Moulton, IA. Step-children Deb (Tim) Bonnstetter of Remsen, IA; Doug Kohler (special friend Tomeeko Young) of Biloxi, MS; Dean Kohler of Remsen, IA; 36 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren & 4 great-great grandchildren. Her brother Larry (Donna) Bird of Marcus, IA; sisters-in-law Jean Bird of South Sioux City, NE, Mary Bird of Alton, IA and Rita Sitzman of LeMars, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Al & Ken, her parents, son, Douglas in infancy; son, Randy Gengler; daughter, Kathy Canup; grandson, Jimmy Henrich; brothers, Pete, Ed and Jerry Bird; sisters Molly Florke and Nancy Bird.
Casket Bearers will be Ken Gengler, Rob Yockey, Orie Henrich, Eric Gengler, Colt Ludwig & Brian Weber.
