Mariana was born on October 16, 1936, in Granite City, Illinois, to Edward and Anna (Weber) Wiehardt. She was the oldest of three children. She graduated from Washington High School in Granite City and went on to work alongside some of her lifelong friends.
One of Mariana’s favorite things to do was go dancing. It was on the dance floor where she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Schnee. Bill took her out of the city and brought her home to Alton, Iowa, where they made their home for nearly 60 years. Together, they raised three children and built a life filled with friendship, laughter, and community.
Mariana and Bill enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cards with many long‑time friends. Mariana also loved to read and treasured time spent with others. After Bill’s passing in 2017, Mariana stayed busy working at St. Mary’s Catholic Church until she was 80 years old. She continued to enjoy life fully—playing cards with friends on Tuesdays, going out to dinner every other Thursday, and always finding time for a little fun and “shenanigans.”
Mariana is survived by her daughters, Nancy Gesink of Kingsley, Iowa, and her children, Melissa (Doug) Wurth, with their children Madison and Xander, and Denise (Scott) Wilson; daughter, Gina (Mike) Kleinhesselink of Alton, Iowa, and their children Ben (Kassie) Kleinhesselink, with their son Harrison; Holly (Brandon) Van Roekel, with their children Brecken and Brynlee; and Kelsey (Austin) Todd, with their children Linkin and Maren; her son, Dan Schnee of Alton, IA.
She is also survived by her brothers, Glenn (Mary) Wiehardt and Walter Wiehardt, both of Texas; brother-in-law, Frank Schnee of Florida; along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Schnee; her parents; her in‑laws; a son‑in‑law, Brian Gesink; her great‑grandson, Layton Michael Todd; three sisters‑in‑law, Pat (Glenn), Claudette (Walter), Jewell Schnee; one young brother-in-law, Emmett Schnee; and three nephews, Jeffrey, Rick, and Michael Schnee;
Mariana will be remembered for her warmth, her love of family and friends, and the joy she found in the simple pleasures of life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Casket bearers will be Melissa Wurth, Denise Wilson, Ben Kleinhesselink, Holly Van Roekel, Kelsey Todd, Madison & Xander Wurth.
