Maureen Schroeder, 94, of Remsen, IA died Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Bavarian Meadows Assisted Living in Remsen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA with Father Timothy Pick officiating and Deacon Doug Heeren assisting.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, IA.  Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, there will be a parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.  Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.  Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Maureen Hays, was born June 16, 1928, at Valley Springs, S.D., the daughter of Donald and Loretta (Kennedy) Hays. She grew up near Valley Springs and attended elementary school there. She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School at Larchwood in 1945. As a young girl Maureen and her twin, Mary, were models for Lux soap. They also performed and sang for many events, which led them to Briar Cliff College to pursue their love of music. Both of the twins met their future husbands the first year of college which resulted in a double wedding and lives lived in Remsen. 

Maureen married LeRoy Schroeder on Nov. 19,1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Larchwood. They made their home south of Remsen where they were engaged in farming. In 1978 they retired and moved into Remsen. In 2017 she moved to Bavarian Meadows. 

Maureen was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen where she was a eucharist minister for ten years and church decorator for many more years. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Christian Mothers, Church Choir and taught CCD classes, she donated many quilts over the years for the church auction and volunteered for Trash for Cash. Maureen and LeRoy were instrumental in the restoration of St. Mary's Grotto in 1985 and in its maintenance from then until 2005. Her faith was very important to her.

Over the years Maureen enjoyed gardening, golfing, and bowling. She loved singing and listening to music, shopping, quilting and having coffee with the girls. She especially enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren. 

Survivors include, one son, Donald (Mary) of Hartford, S.D.; three daughters; Bonnie Schroeder of Daufuskie Island, S.C., Helen (Bill) Bailey of Chippewa Falls,WI., and Patti (John) Brodell of Davenport; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren. And numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, father and mother in-law John (Mary) Schroeder, brother Joseph Hayes, twin sister Mary Loutsch, and a sister Nancy Keller.  In-Laws; Clarence (Florence) Schroeder, Ray (Virginia) (Florence) Schroeder, Helen (Alfred) Keffeler, Elmer (Hildegarde) (Joan) Schroeder, Dominic (Valeria) Schroeder, Vernon (Louise Beck) Schroeder, and Jeanette (Clarence) Ricke.

Casket bearers will be Matt Schroeder, Ben Scharff, Jake Lukowicz, Tyler Brodell, Nate Scharff and Abe Lukowicz.
